  • Hyperpigmentation: How to Prevent & Correct

What causes Hyperpigmentation Different Types of Hyperpigmentation How to prevent Hyperpigmentation How We Treat Hyperpigmentation with Facials How Dermatologists Treat Hyperpigmentation Product Recommendations to Treat Hyperpigmentation What Is Hyperpigmentation And What Causes It? Ever wondered about hyperpigmentation and what causes it? Well, let's explore this with a gentle touch, shall we? Hyperpigmentation is actually quite common, and it's when a certain part of your skin decides to take on a darker shade compared to your usual skin tone. And you know what? There's a trio of sun exposure, hormones, and inflammation that all have important parts to play in this skin story. Imagine the sun, that warm glow we all love – it can trigger these little cells called melanocytes in your skin to get busy. They're like your skin's artists, creating more pigment to shield the rest of your skin from those UV rays. It's like a protective dance your skin does! But wait, there's more charm to this tale! Hormones, those lovely messengers in your body, can actually speed up the production of melanin too. So, during the wonderful journey of pregnancy, it's totally normal for your skin to be more colorful! And then there's inflammation, a bit of a hurdle in this skin adventure. Sometimes, when your skin isn't feeling its best, it might leave behind these darker patches – it's kind of like a memory of the skin's resilience. We call it post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and it's often more common in those with beautiful darker skin tones. But hey, that's not all! There's a whole mix of medical factors, medications, and even your own special genetic makeup that can influence how your skin expresses its pigmentation. What Are The Different Types Of Hyperpigmentation? Whenever you come across a new dark spot that's giving you a little concern, it's actually really important to connect with a dermatologist. They're like the superheroes of skincare and can help make sure everything's A-OK. It's all about making sure that spot is harmless and nothing to worry about. Hey, you know what? Regular check-ins with a dermatologist can be a pretty great idea for most of us. It's like giving your skin a little love and attention every year. They can take a look at any new or changing dark spots or changes in your skin's color and give you the peace of mind you deserve. Now, let's chat about skin pigmentation – it's like this beautiful canvas with different textures. Some spots are flat, like patches or macules, while others might be raised, like papules or plaques. Think of it as your skin's way of expressing itself in various forms! And guess what? Just like life, skin pigmentation comes in all shades and styles. You might see a patch of skin darken, like with melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Or, you could come across a darker lesion, like a mole or a seborrheic keratosis, which can kind of look like a "liver spot." And some skin rashes, like lichen planus, can also join the colorful crew. Now, let's dive a bit deeper into hyperpigmentation. It's like a journey into where the pigment sets up camp in your skin. Liver spots usually hang out on the outermost layer, which is called the epidermis. But then there's melasma, which decides to go for a two-layer experience – both in the epidermis and the dermis, which is like the skin's second layer. It's like pigmentation on a whole new level! How We Treat Hyperpigmentation with Facials at Pretty Please Skincare Hyperpigmentation, while a bit of a challenge to tackle, is a journey that we approach with care and commitment. Our focus is on gradual progress, which is why we recommend monthly treatments combined with a personalized home regimen crafted by our skilled Skin Therapist. To address this, we've designed a brightening facial protocol dedicated to helping you reclaim a more even complexion. Everyone's skin is unique, and our aim is to infuse as many brightening products as possible into the facial experience. We're cautious in our approach, as we believe in "first, do no harm." Our strategy is about testing, strengthening, and gradually enhancing the facial's impact over time. Let's talk about the powerful products and treatments we harness to aid in the battle against hyperpigmentation: Exfoliation: Embracing the magic of Turmeric Energizing Treatment or the Bright Skin VitaPeel, we gently coax your skin into its brighter potential. Microdermabrasion: This treatment works wonders in addressing melasma, uneven skin tone, and the after-effects of sun exposure. In a single session, your skin can begin its journey to rejuvenation. We pamper you with a Stone Crop Gel Wash treatment to round off the experience. LED Light Therapy: The incredible Celluma’s LED Light therapy partners with your skin's natural rejuvenation, helping to expedite the process while ensuring those unwanted visitors like bacteria don't crash the party. Masquing: Ah, the delightful phase! This is where Pretty Please facials truly shine. Our sculpting massage technique will make you feel like your facial muscles are awakening from a peaceful slumber. During this process, the Stone Crop Masque & Citrus & Kale Masque work their magic, leaving you refreshed and revitalized. And to send you on your way with that unmistakable glow, we've got a perfect finish for you. The Pineapple Tonique with Tranexamic acid has been receiving rave reviews from skin experts for its ability to brighten and reduce dark spots. We've got your back with the Citrus Kale Serum, Strawberry Hydrator, and Bright Skin Moisturizer – they'll join forces to ensure you leave with a radiant smile and a confidence boost. What Are The Best Ways To Prevent Uneven Skin Tone? The sun is like this artist that can create some changes in our skin tone, which we sometimes call dyspigmentation. When we're out in those sun rays, our skin might decide to produce more melanin, which can lead to those pesky dark spots and a not-so-even texture. And if we accidentally catch a sunburn, well, that can stir up some skin inflammation and even bring in these tiny blood vessels, often called broken blood vessels or those little red spots. But fret not, because there are some truly lovely ways to protect your skin's harmony! Sunscreen and sun protection are like magical shields against unwanted changes. It's like giving your skin a loving hug of defense. And hey, if you're out and about when the sun is at its most intense, which is usually between 10 AM and 2 PM, consider taking cover. It's like giving yourself a little break from the sun's strong vibes. And speaking of covers, think about those wide-brimmed hats or even clothes with built-in SPF – they're like your stylish bodyguards, shielding you from any potential harm and keeping your natural glow intact. How Can You Fix Dark Spots? Curious about brightening up those dark spots? You're not alone, and there are some pretty sweet ways to go about it. Sometimes, those dark spots that pop up after acne inflammation can be like those little guests that eventually decide to leave on their own. It's like they're just taking their time to bid us farewell. Depending on the level of inflammation and the pigment in your skin, they might stick around for a few weeks, months, or a bit more. Just remember, during this phase, a trusty sunscreen can be your best buddy – it's like giving your skin a cozy umbrella against the sunlight, so things don't get trickier. Now, let's talk about those spots that need a bit more attention. For those situations where dark spots are a bit stubborn, we've got some cool tools in our beauty arsenal. Ablative and non-ablative lasers and light-based gadgets are like our magical wands here. Ablative lasers do a bit of a "reset" by gently removing some of the outer skin layers, kind of like revealing a fresh canvas underneath. On the other hand, non-ablative lasers are more like a warm embrace – they pass through the skin without taking any layers off. And guess what? Both of these options are your pals when it comes to fixing those spots and helping your skin's texture and tone shine. But hey, you know what's awesome? Besides lasers, there are other avenues to explore when it comes to these dark spots. It's like having a few more cards up your sleeve. This condition can actually be addressed with some pretty amazing natural options. Ever heard of azelaic acid, Vitamin C, and bearberry extract? These are like the superheroes of the natural world when it comes to targeting mild hyperpigmentation. They're like little gifts from nature that can make a difference! Product Recommendations For The Appearance Of Hyperpigmentation Looking for some wonderful products to help with those pesky dark spots? We've got you covered with some recommendations from the heart of Eminence Organics. These goodies are like little boosts to support those professional treatments, with ingredients that really know how to tackle and gently break up those dark spots. Let's start with Azelaic Acid, which is like a gentle superhero in our Bright Skin Licorice Root Exfoliating Peel. This peel is all about working naturally to make uneven pigmentation a thing of the past. With alpha hydroxy acids like lactic and mandelic acids, it's a real treat for your skin. And guess what? We've got azelaic acid on board too! It's like this wonderful antioxidant that's determined to soothe inflammation and fade away those pesky dark spots. It's like a little brightening potion in a bottle. And then there's our Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum. Imagine a serum that's not only super fast-absorbing, but also brings some serious Vitamin C magic to the party. This serum is like a superhero for brightening up your skin and giving it a lovely even tone. It's not just about evening out the patches, but also giving your skin an overall boost in radiance. It's like a splash of sunshine for your complexion. Now, let's talk about the Bright Skin Moisturizer SPF 40 – an award-winning gem that's truly a double whammy. It's like a guardian angel with its built-in SPF 40 sunscreen, protecting your skin from further sun adventures. And you know what's amazing? • How Often Should I Get a Facial?

Oh, we know... that after-facial glow and freshness you feel... You want to keep it up right!?! This is what Pretty Please is all about and why we are known for the best facials in New York City for over a decade! Don't feel guilty... aside from the self-indulgence and pampering of our amazing facial service, there is science behind these treatments to achieve great long-term results for your skin. 28 days & Counting New skin cells are formed in the basal layer, the deepest of the four layers that comprise the epidermis, our skin's outermost layer. One thing you should be aware of is that skin regenerates every 28 days. New skin cells are formed in the basal layer, the deepest of the four layers that comprise the epidermis, our skin's outermost layer. These new cells, which are thick and column-shaped, divide in half, with half remaining where they are and the other half moving up through the different layers, changing shape and appearance as they go. The cells have lost their nucleus by the time they reach the skin's surface. They're essentially dead and slough away in a never-ending cycle of regeneration. How Often To Get A Facial? A General Answer Given the time it takes for new cells to form and climb to the surface, having too many facials might aggravate your skin. You want to strike a balance between having a facial frequently enough to maximize efficacy and not so frequently that you cause harm. After all, your skin is recovering from a facial: After a chemical peel treatment, your skin is still pink for 24 hours; 48 to 72 hours, the skin may continue to expel impurities; and up to five to seven days, the skin may still be mending from forceful extractions. In addition, your skin is awaiting the appearance of new cells. Pretty Please Skincare's Owner & Skin Guru, Jennifer Rasa, recommends scheduling facials according to the cell renewal timetable, "Since your skin regenerates itself approximately every 28 days, it would be ideal for you to get it treated every 4 to 6 weeks." This not only corresponds with skin cell turnover, but it also means you're routinely checking in with your esthetician to ensure your skincare regimen is on track. "If monthly facials are not an option, coming in seasonally would be the next best thing..." says Jennifer. Lastly, even though it is recommended that you at least get a facial once every four to six weeks, the frequency varies depending on what type of facial you are getting. "The frequency with which you have a facial can also be determined by the individual skin concern being addressed," says Jennifer. "There is a possibility that someone with severe acne or hyperpigmentation will have to undergo a series of treatment sessions more frequently in the beginning." Facials For Acne Concerns If you're undergoing acne treatments, you're probably getting a gentle chemical peel once a week for four to eight weeks. If you're undergoing acne treatments, you're probably getting a gentle chemical peel once a week for four to eight weeks. Your facial will almost certainly include extractions, especially if you have blackheads, which are open pores affected with sebum on the skin's surface, or whiteheads, which are "closed" comedones clogged with built-up pollutants but hidden in a thin layer of skin. After you've finished your treatments, the esthetician will usually review your skin and schedule monthly sessions. Facial For Hyperpigmentation Facials to treat hyperpigmentation use chemical peels similar to acne facials to address dark spots, areas of the skin that are affected by injury or skin inflammation, and even melasma, which sometimes appears in women taking birth control pills and during pregnancy. A weekly treatment plan for four to five weeks is typical, but as Jennifer points out, "the frequency of obtaining a facial for hyperpigmentation would depend on the client's skin sensitivity." After the once-week facials, your esthetician will give your skin time to recuperate before beginning another cycle, if necessary. An LED a Week to treat Acne On the topic of pimples, LED light therapy has proven to be an extremely effective weapon, and that is the right word to use! The skincare industry borrowed the idea from the U.S. Navy SEALs in the 1990s as a way to treat acne and aging in the body by speeding up the body's recovery from wounds. LED light is blue in color, and it reaches the sebaceous glands where it targets Propionibacterium acnes, a bacteria responsible for acne. Red light is longer wavelength infrared penetrates deeper into the skin and is supposed to stimulate collagen protein and calm inflammation, resulting in skin that looks fuller and smoother. There is some consensus that LED lighting can benefit acne...especially when it combines blue and red LED light...even though the scientific verdict on its anti-aging properties remains out. Hooman Khorasani, the chief of the division of Dermatologic and Cosmetic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the blue and red LED combo “may reduce the size of the sebaceous glands, so you don’t produce as much oil.” The other good news is you can have up to one LED facial a week. Monthly Microdermabrasion The monthly microdermabrasion treatment is another high-tech method of treating your skin by tricking it into replacing old skin cells on your surface with new ones. This is achieved by tricking your skin into believing it is being injured, which in fact is what it is, gently, in a way. Our microdermabrasion machine exfoliates your skin with a diamond tip while gently suctioning up the dead cells. Quick and non-invasive, microdermabrasion will brighten and smooth out your skin but the immediate after-effects can be a little redness and sensitivity. It’s best to keep these sessions to once a month. So check your calendar, consider your options, and count up the days until your next spa visit with us! This wavelength is also very popular and targets the deeper layers of your skin in order to improve signs of aging. Red LED light targets the collagen-producing cells in your skin, increasing their production of collagen. Our skin's collagen production reduces significantly at age 25, leading to increased signs of aging. Red LED light is a fast, non-invasive way to increase collagen production and leave your skin looking youthful. Though red LED light therapy is most commonly used for collagen products, it also has other benefits. Red LED light therapy can reduce inflammation in the skin. If you're someone with sensitive, red, or rosacea-prone skin, this treatment is a great option for you. Red and blue treatments done together can also be an excellent option for those with breakout-prone skin, as they can treat active breakouts and acne scarring in one treatment. • Facial Extractions and What to Expect

We all want to have beautiful clean pores, am I right?! Facial extractions help clean out the gunk, such as blackheads and whiteheads to help us maintain that clean, fresh-faced look! What exactly is involved in extractions you ask? Read on to find out all the deets that you'll need to know! Facials are a common beauty treatment designed to refresh the face and leave skin feeling and looking smooth and clean. One essential step in most facials is extractions! Facial extractions help to remove blackheads and other debris from the pores of your skin. It is a relatively simple process that is manually done with the help of an experienced esthetician. Why Do People Get Facial Extractions? The most common reason for facial extractions is to remove blackheads or other types of acne that can leave pores looking dirty and clogged. In fact, most people assume that dirt is the cause of blackheads, though this is not exactly true. Blackheads are actually formed when sebum and dead skin cells build up within the pores. They become dark due to exposure to oxidized air. Facial extractions are also an effective acne treatment, helping to successfully remove stubborn and painful pustules. However, only certain kinds of acne can be safely removed without causing damage to the skin. Whether or not your esthetician can extract a pimple depends on its size and depth. In some cases, deeper or lots of clogged pores will require multiple extractions that cannot be safely completed in a single visit. These will require some extra care and maintenance to be successfully cleared without damaging the skin. What to Expect During Facial Extraction Facial extractions are usually part of a larger overall facial. Before any facial, your esthetician will likely ask you about your skin type and sensitivities to get a sense of the type of products to use. They will then move on to cleansing, which is generally completed in a few steps. These include: Cleansing Exfoliation Steaming Both the exfoliation and steaming help to soften the skin, making extractions easier. The steaming and cleansing process generally lasts no more than 10 minutes. The Extraction Process Generally, your esthetician will provide you with eye pads or other protective eyewear. This protects your eyes from the bright lights used to locate any clogged pores. Your esthetician will always wear gloves to ensure bacteria does not enter the skin. Then, with a gauze-wrapped finger or facial extraction tool, they will apply gentle pressure to the skin to remove blackheads and any other congestion. The extraction process will take roughly 10 minutes. This will vary depending on the number of blackheads and the severity of congestion. Are Facial Extractions Painful? In general, facial extractions should not be painful. Your esthetician will only use gentle pressure when working with your skin. All facial extraction tools keep both functionality and comfort in mind during their design. The goal is to not damage the skin, in order to avoid facial scarring. What To Do After Facial Extractions Once your facial extractions are complete, your esthetician will apply an antibacterial or antiseptic toner to the skin. This helps to restore the skin's pH and prevent breakouts, which may occur after a facial. (see post facial blues to read more about that) They may also use high-frequency currents to assist with: Calming irritated skin Healing blemishes Reducing redness These currents will not be used in those with heart conditions, epilepsy, or pregnant women. How Often To Get Facial Extractions Though everyone is different, you should be getting facials every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain optimal results. Once or twice a month, visit your esthetician to stay on top of blackheads or any type of congestion that builds up in the pores. Getting facial extractions too frequently can irritate the skin. Be sure to talk to your esthetician about the ideal facial extraction schedule for your specific skin type. Facial Extraction Price There are many different price levels depending on the types of facial you want to get. Extractions are done in conjunction with more extensive facials that feature more cleansing and post-extraction care. Ultimately, choosing the right facial will depend on both your budget and your skincare needs. In general, though, a facial session will cost anywhere from $150-$300. Why You Should Leave Extractions to the Professionals Our skin is able to stand up to some pretty tough stuff! But, it's still delicate and requires gentle care. Though many people with acne tend to pick at their skin, this can make achieving clear skin incredibly difficult. In fact, picking at your skin and popping your own pimples can lead to: Redness Scarring Additional breakouts This is because your skin can contain harmful bacteria that only clog up your pores. You may also apply too much pressure or push too hard, leading to scarring and redness. However, professional extractions from skin experts take additional steps to keep your skin clean, healthy, and cared for in the most gentle manner possible. Achieving Clear Skin Is Easy Now that you know more about facial extractions, you're probably feeling like this skin treatment sounds like the right choice for you! Facial extractions not only help you achieve a clear complexion, less congestion, and better product absorption, but they can also boost confidence, provide stress relief, and create an overall sense of wellness. Book an appointment today to get on the path to clean, glowing skin! Our team of expert estheticians will make sure you leave feeling pampered, healthy, and beautiful!

  • How a Microcurrent Facial Can Help You Age With Grace

When it comes to supporting aging skin, the pursuit of the latest skin treatment is always a hot topic for discussion! The latest technology that the beauty industry has been buzzing over these days is microcurrent facials, and for good reason! You’re probably wondering what microcurrent facials are and how they work? Well, you are in the right place to find out exactly what a professional microcurrent facial really involves and who could actually benefit from them! What Is a Microcurrent Facial Exactly? You have probably heard of certain exercises that will strengthen your facial muscles and keep your face tight. The aim of these exercises is to keep your facial muscles toned and strong. That way, they will act as a firm foundation for your skin. By doing this, you should be able to help support and strengthen mature skin and allow your skin to age with grace. The science behind microcurrent facials is quite similar. A microcurrent facial is a treatment that is unique compared to other treatments that help support aging skin because it is non-invasive and does not include the use of any injectables. Instead, the main ingredient for this kind of facial is low-voltage electricity. While this may sound scary, low-voltage electricity is completely painless and it won’t do you any harm. In fact, you will find that it can be very beneficial for your skin. It involves the use of a microcurrent facial device. This device has prongs on the end of it that function to deliver electrical currents into your skin. These currents are designed to target the muscles under your skin. When this happens, you might feel light shocks invigorating your facial muscles, but these shocks should not be painful. Some people describe the sensation as more of a tingling feeling as the electricity surges through their facial muscles. As this happens, the electrical signals will enliven your facial muscles and actually stimulate your cells. Some microcurrent facial studies have shown that this treatment is able to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in some people. This is especially true for wrinkles that occur around the forehead. There are even certain microcurrent facial devices that you can use at home on your own time. However, professional microcurrent devices tend to do a better job. Microcurrent Facials and Cell Stimulation The secret behind the microcurrent facial benefits is how this type of facial is able to stimulate the ability of cells to produce collagen. Collagen is a molecule that occurs naturally in the skin. You can also find collagen in your bones, ligaments, and joints. It is important for connective tissue and skin because it acts as a supportive framework. When you’re young, your skin is full of collagen. That’s why your skin is so tight and plump. But after the age of 25, you will start to lose 1% of your body’s collagen every year. As this happens, your skin will start to need some extra support. MIcrocurrent facials have the ability to stimulate the cells in your skin to produce collagen on their own. This is important because as you get older, it will be harder for your cells to produce as much collagen as they used to. By stimulating your cells, your body will be able to keep up with its collagen levels. Besides the stimulation of collagen production, microcurrent facials are also able to stimulate the production of ATP, also known as adenosine triphosphate. ATP is pure energy and it allows your skin and muscle cells to function. By increasing ATP production, your skin and muscles will have more energy than ever before. What to Know When Getting Microcurrent Facials If you’re thinking about getting a microcurrent facial for the first time, the first thing you should know is that it is totally painless. Many times traditional treatments for supporting aging skin such as facelifts, tend to be very painful and involve a lot of down time. That’s not the case for microcurrent facials. You can get back to your daily routine right after getting this kind of facial. This is ideal for those who have busy schedules and don’t have a lot of time to spare. You should also know that you will need to get multiple treatments to reap the most benefits of this facial. As with any kind of exercise, microcurrent facials need time to strengthen your facial muscles and get your cells stimulated. After about 6 weeks of consistent treatments, you should start to notice a significant difference in the tightness, contour, puffiness, and tone of your face and facial muscles. The microcurrent facial is becoming a popular innovation as more and more people are starting to enjoy its benefits. Stimulating your skin and facial muscles with electrical currents will brighten, tone, and plump skin while also boosting collagen production and blood circulation, giving your skin a glowing, firmer appearance! • Post-facial Breakout Blues

What to do, Why it happens, and why better skin is on the way. There are many reasons that could lead to breakouts, but the one that surprises most maybe a facial! Yes, you heard that right! (before we scare you anymore, it happens rarely) Facials include steam, exfoliation, extractions, custom-tailored treatments, masks, and massage. All of which is to help achieve a healthier, brighter, smoother, and clearer appearance. Unfortunately, some may experience post-facial breakouts, and it's a perfectly normal process for certain skin types! We know this can be upsetting and frustrating for clients already experiencing acne and problematic skin, but we’re here to help you understand the why of which this may happen, what to do if this happens to you, and also provide some tips on how to reduce the chances of this happening. The most common skin type that may experience a post-facial breakout is sensitive/acne-prone skin or if you have not had a facial in a long time (or ever at all). When you come in for a facial and your skin is sensitive, congested/acne, your skin may purge for a couple of weeks after. This is NOT your new forever skin and it will start to clear in about 2 weeks after your facial. When you get a facial you are cleaning out pores that need to be cleaned out in order for you to stop getting the repeated breakouts/congestion that you've been experiencing. After you clean out the pores, deeper oil and debris can still be lodged beneath the skin's surface. Once we exfoliate and unplug the whiteheads, blackheads, and acne, oxygen will then naturally pull up the rest of that deeper congestion, and it comes to the surface, temporarily. This is a very natural process of how the skin starts to clean itself out and regain balance for some skin types experiencing acne or congestion. This is what you may be experiencing. If you do experience any type of purge here is what you should do! First, breath, stressing out will only make matters worse! The best thing you could do is go for a less is more approach! Do not use anything new or harsh on your skin to try and clear it. Also, do not touch anything that has surfaced or you will spread bacteria and it will not be able to heal correctly, and it will also increase the chances of scarring. For as long as this purge lasts, we recommend that you only use a gentle cleanser and light moisturizer that you know your skin likes and that’s it! Unless you’re Dr. has you on anything else that you have been on (keep using that). Less is absolutely more until your skin starts to normalize. Here are some tips to help minimize the risks of post-facial breakouts. The best thing you can do before a facial would be to strengthen your skin's natural barrier. You can do so by simplifying your routine. We suggest stopping the use of all acids, exfoliants, waxing, face shaving, and any other products that stimulate your skin for at least a week before your facial. Using just a gentle cleanser and moisturizer both morning and night will help strengthen your skin barrier and help reduce the risk of over-stimulation and irritation during your treatment. Post facial we recommend that you avoid putting on makeup for a day or two after your facial, avoid going in direct sun and using SPF 30+, avoid exfoliation for one week, and if you feel anything surfacing just spot treat those areas to help jump-start the healing process. Facials are a wonderful way to help you achieve a beautiful complexion! To achieve great skin, however, is a process and sometimes things may get a bit worse before they get better. Especially if you haven't had a facial in a long time, don't get facials regularly, and have sensitive/acne-prone skin, but this will definitely normalize. With consistent facials and the correct at-home care routine, for your specific skin type, you will start seeing those beautiful results you hoped for!

  • Facials 101 - What is a Facial?

A Spa facial puts you in the hands of a licensed esthetician to help recharge your skin and tackle a handful of skin concerns in the process. On top of supercharging your skin, it’s also incredibly relaxing!!! For over 10 years, at Pretty Please, we have strived to create the best facials to meet many of the needs and concerns of our clients. Pretty Please is located in the heart of New York City, the melting pot of the world! This has provided us the opportunity to help clients of all ages, races, and ethnicities improve their skin. Our facial includes a number of steps to treat your skin. In the beginning, we provide a pre-facial consult to learn more about your skin, health, and any medications you might be taking that could affect the skin. From there, the facial begins! See the steps below :) Steps In A Facial Treatment In fact, you can expect nine or more steps in a professional facial. Cleansing: The esthetician removes any makeup and surface buildup with a cleansing product such as a cleansing gel, oil, or milky cleanser, depending on your skin type. Skin Analysis: The esthetician takes a close look at your complexion, often using magnification, to identify your skin’s current state. Steaming: The esthetician often incorporates steam to soften pore congestion and assist with extractions, should you need them. Exfoliating: The esthetician applies an exfoliating treatment to remove the buildup of dead skin cells. Typically, this treatment will be of a higher concentration than exfoliants you use at home. Extraction: The esthetician performs extractions if needed, clearing away blackheads and whiteheads. (Please review our extraction policy on our facials page) Facial Massage: To stimulate the facial muscles, help drain lymphatic fluids and assist the skin with absorbing further products, the esthetician massages the face gently but thoroughly. Masking: One or more face masks are applied, each of which are carefully selected based on your skin assessment and analysis. (We incorporate our facial massage during this step for better penetration into the skin) Finishing: The esthetician completes the treatment with the appropriate finishing steps including toner, serums, moisturizers, eye care, and SPF to condition and protects your skin from environmental stressors. Our Skin Therapists will adjust these steps depending on your skin type or concerns. For example, should you be a sensitive skin type, they may reduce steam. If you are not struggling with clogged pores, they may not need to perform many extractions. If you have concerns about any step during a facial, don’t hesitate to ask the esthetician to explain their process. Why Do I Need A Facial? We all have skin goals. A facial is the best way to ensure you see the long-term results you want in your skin. Owner and Skin Therapist, Jennifer Rasa, says “Teaching you how to care for your skin properly is one of our goals here at Pretty Please Skincare. We use a variety of techniques, treatments, and curated skin regimens. Facials are an essential part in helping care for the health of your skin.” To simplify why this all matters, we’ve broken it down into four key benefits. 1. Get A Thorough Cleaning Think of a spa facial in the same way as we view our dental hygiene. Many receive dental cleanings, 2 - 4 a year. Sure, you brush and floss daily, but you still get your teeth professionally cleaned. In the same way, regular spa treatments are an essential complement to your daily skincare routine. Professional facials, especially acne facials, take the state of your complexion to the next level. Many skin conditions require continuous care, and the effectiveness of home skincare needs to be boosted with regular spa treatments. Together, at-home and in-spa treatments produce successful results, better and faster. 2. Hire A Pro Extractor Picking your pimples is a big NO-NO. You are at risk of creating scars and dark marks when you squeeze or touch blemishes. You can also spread bacteria causing pimples across your skin leading to more pimples! Spa facials provide a sterile environment and a seasoned pro to properly extract blackheads and pustules. (Please review our extraction policy on our facials page) 3. Ask For An Expert Opinion Decoding your skin type can sometimes be tricky. With constant changes due to seasons, diet, age, and even weather, it’s reassuring to get professional advice on a regular basis. For example, is your skin really dry - or is it actually dehydrated? While dry skin lacks natural oils and needs more oil-based products, dehydration is a condition that lacks water, from both inside out, needing more water in your diet and rehydrating products. With similar signs and symptoms, it can be tricky to sort out what you are dealing with, but this is exactly what an esthetician is trained to help with. During the consultation, your esthetician will be able to diagnose your skin and develop treatments specifically catered to you. 4. Relax And Unwind Last but certainly not the least (and our favorite). Pretty Please strives to make our facial spa your little sanctuary within the busy streets of NYC. We want to provide an intimate and soothing experience in our little judgment-free oasis. And since stress plays a role in the condition of our skin… we find it important to incorporate facial/arm massages, hot towels, and the amazing aroma of our organic products. Need us to say more? ;)

  • A Guide to Caring for Combination Skin

Around 50 million people deal with acne issues in the United States. That's not even talking about other skin issues such as flakiness, blemishes, dark circles...the list goes on. Are you comfortable in your skin? You may be finding it difficult to get your skin under control, with an oily T-zone that constantly breaks out yet dry cheeks and under-eye areas that are prone to patches and flakiness. Does that sound like you? You likely have combination skin and have been caring for it all wrong. Different skin types require different care, and combination skin is the fussiest. Keep reading for everything you need to know about caring for your combination skin. Your skin will be glowing and healthy in no time. What Is Combination Skin? Combination skin is exactly what it sounds like — a combination of both dry and oily skin. This means that some areas of your face may be prone to dryness and flaking, while others are oily and greasy. Generally, the oily areas are concentrated in your T-zone. This includes your forehead, chin, and nose — all of those areas where spots love to pop up. This is because the sebaceous glands in this area are very active. The dry to normal areas of the face are typically the cheeks. Combination skin is very common, but it does require some special care as different areas of your face need different treatment. Do You Have Combination Skin? Understanding what type of skin you have is crucial if you want to take proper care of it and keep your skin looking healthy and glowing. So, do you have combination skin? While it's very common, it can be difficult to identify. You may be swinging between thinking that your skin is very oily some days and very dry others. These fluctuations are normal and depend very much on your lifestyle and environment. There are some skin secrets for spotting combination skin that will help you identify what skin type you have. First off, notice the areas that are oily and shiny on your face. People with oily skin will shine all over their faces. If you have combination skin, the oily areas will be on your T-zone while the perimeter of your face will be drier. This means that if you have combination skin, acne will be concentrated on your forehead, nose, and chin. Do you have a particularly shiny forehead but no shine on your cheeks? You probably have combination skin. Notice how your skin changes according to the weather as combination skin is particularly sensitive to weather changes. You may notice that in extreme temperatures your skin becomes drier inc certain areas while oilier in others. Caring for combination skin isn't the easiest, but there are many facial tips and tricks to help you keep your skin glowing and healthy. Washing Your Face When You Have Combination Skin When it comes to washing your face, gentle facial cleansers and gentle exfoliation are key. Washing your face is the most important step in your skincare regime to clean your skin of the dirt, oils, and impurities that build up throughout the day. Look for a cleanser that will absorb oil and mattify your oily T-zone without over-drying your cheeks and the areas under your eyes. A gentle cleanser for all skin types which is free from harsh fragrances or alcohol will work best. Finding a face scrub for all skin types is your best bet when it comes to exfoliation. Look for a gentle scrub that will remove dirt and grime from your skin's surface while removing dead skin. You should only exfoliate a few times a week as you don't want to be too harsh or scrub on clean and new skin. Skin Care Tips So, you've got the washing and exfoliation covered — that's the easy bit, just stick to products for all skin types. But what about the rest of your skincare regime? Perhaps you have a simple skincare routine that involves washing and moisturizer. On the other hand, you may have a multi-step program. Either way, you need to make it work for your combination skin. When it comes to moisturizers, you need a hydrating and light moisturizer. Don't avoid moisturizing your T-zone for fear of making it more oily. Dehydrated skin actually produces oil, so you want to keep it nicely hydrated and nourished. Lightweight formulas that are extremely hydrating are best for combination skin. It will provide the moisture you need in the dry areas while avoiding clogging the oily areas. Now onto the extra products. Using a toner is recommended for removing any dirt and oil that your cleanser missed. Avoid alcohol-based toners in favor of something gentle and soothing. When it comes to serum or treatment, divide and conquer works best. Choose emollient-rich products for the dry areas and reserve oil-absorbing serums and treatments for the T-zone areas. Treat yourself and your skin to a facial treatment every so often, where a professional can tailor a treatment to your skin. Combination Skin Secrets There are a couple of amazing ingredients to seek out in your facial products that will help to keep your combination skin happy. Look out for products that include: Salicylic acid - to regulate oil production and unclog pores Hyaluronic acid - great for hydrating the entire face without greasiness Lactic acid - mild exfoliant for removing dead skin from dry areas Antioxidants - protects skin against UV exposure Emollients - necessary for dry areas to soften and smooth Remember to avoid using emollients on T-zone areas. Most importantly, experiment with different skincare regimes to find the one that works best for your skin. Different Skin Types Need Different Types of Love Your skin is unique and beautiful, and you need to understand the different skin types so that you can give your skin the love it deserves. • Skin Secrets: How Often Should You Moisturize Your Face?

Your skin is an essential part of your body that holds everything together. Skin care helps improve your appearance and your health as a whole. It makes you look younger and beautiful, as well as reduces the cha nces of skin problems. It also helps you fight wrinkles. One of the main practices of skin care is moisturizing the skin. It is a must for everyone to moisturize and should be part of your everyday skin care routine. Though what works best would depend on the skin type that you have. Today, we will look at how often you should moisturize as well as look at these skin secrets. This also includes tips on what you can do to moisturize your face and keep it healthy. How Often Should You Moisturize? Let us first look at how often you should moisturize your face. Noting how important it is, you should also take this to heart. You need to moisturize your skin every day to benefit from it. In this case, you should make it a point to cleanse your skin twice a day. With that same frequency, you need to moisturize it twice a day. In this case, you need to do this during the morning and at night. You would notice an interesting pattern here. In this case, moisturizing should happen right after cleansing. Have it done first thing in the morning and then at night before going to sleep. Reasons to Moisturize It makes you wonder, why should we moisturize every day? Consider the situation that our skin faces outside. There are plenty of factors that can damage your skin, including UV rays and pollution. These things can damage your skin and cause problems, such as acne and wrinkles. Proper cleansing can help the skin get rid of pollutants, as well as dead skin cells. The downside is that it can also impact the moisture barrier that your skin has, even for those with oily skin. Make it a habit to moisturize after cleansing to replenish your skin’s moisture levels. This applies to all ages and all skin types. Skin Types to Work With There are five main skin types that you may fall under. These skin types have a specific method for skin care, especially how you moisturize them. Let us look at each of them briefly to see what you should work with every day. Normal Skin A person with normal skin would have fewer problems to worry about. The good thing about this is that you have less to worry about than other skin types. Pores for such skin are usually not as visible, with only a few signs of imperfection. With minimal skin care, you have nothing to worry about as this skin type does not get affected by many factors. You can enjoy different treatments without getting much risk of repercussion. What you need here is to wash your face every morning and night. That would suffice for this type of skin. Oily Skin This skin type stands out with a rather shiny glow. This is due to the glands and pores producing oil a bit more than it should, allowing this bright look. Oily skin brings both upsides and downsides due to its oily nature. For instance, having oily skin leaves it prone to acne far more than the other skin types. This skin type also needs a balanced level of skin care to keep it acne-free. Dry Skin Meanwhile, this one may come off as the inverse of oily skin. This skin type features some rather rough-looking pigmentation. You would also notice lines on such a skin type, as well as visible pores and red areas. The downside that you usually face with this skin type is the peeling and cracking. It ends up feeling scaly to the touch, possibly making your skin itch and irritated. This is the skin type where you need to moisturize more than other skin types. Sensitive Skin This skin type can be rather tricky due to how it gets easily irritated. You would need caution in approaching sensitive skin. Certain minerals and ingredients can cause your skin to turn red and itchy. Due to this, you need to be mindful of what you use for your skin care products. Combination Skin This skin type is a mix of dry and oily skin types. For this one, you notice certain days where your skin feels dry and others where it leans towards oily. Combination skin needs daily attention so that you can adapt to changes in your skin. If you use the wrong products, you may end up aggravating your skin. For the best result, you might want to get a professional to help you get the recommended skin care. How to Moisturize? With these skin types in mind, how should you moisturize? The process for moisturizing your skin is always the same. You'll only need to make adjustments for your skin type with recommended products. First, you start with cleansing. You can do this by washing your face and using a cleanser along with it. The number of times you wash your face depends on your skin type, usually ranging from once to twice a day. After washing and cleansing your face, you might need a toner and a serum. Once you have both applied on your face, it’s time to include the moisturizer. That would be the last step, in this case. There would be times you would need sunscreen. Though you usually have that applied during the daytime. You can also take some additional measures to help your skin’s moisture levels. Try These Skin Secrets to Keep Your Skin Young These skin secrets can help keep you look young and energized. It helps you minimize skin issues, wrinkling, and aging. • 7 Amazing Facial Anti-Aging Secrets

Did you know that 87% of Americans have at least 1 fear of getting old? While most fears are regarding mobility and illnesses, you can bet we're worried about losing our youthful looks too! Regardless of how old you are currently, it's never too early to start with a good regimen to keep wrinkles and lines at bay. Most importantly, you should focus on your face since that's the first thing people see. With the right steps, you'll be able to keep people guessing when it comes to your age. Here are 7 anti-aging secrets for your face that you should know about! 1. Wear Sunscreen You probably already know that the sun's UV rays can cause cancer. But did you know they can also cause premature aging? Sun exposure can cause wrinkles, as well as unsightly spots and loss of facial elasticity, all of which will make you look older than you really are. So whenever you're outside, make sure you're wearing sunscreen. Also, the SPF should be at least 30, although the rule of thumb is the higher, the better. Slather it all over your face, as well as your neck and chest. Apply it in 2 layers so you get maximum coverage. Make sure you also reapply throughout the day so the sun's rays never get a chance to penetrate your skin. You should also gear up with other forms of sun protection, such as long-sleeved clothing, sunglasses, and hats. 2. Eat a Better Diet Is your diet full of sugars and processed foods? Then cut those out pronto! Sugar's already bad for you because it can make you gain weight quickly. It can also provide quick energy spikes but also crashes. More importantly, it's inflammatory, which means sugar can affect your skin's condition. If your diet is high in sugar, you'll see wrinkles, sallowness, blotchiness, and even hardening of your skin. So swap out those foods with high-fructose corn syrup with fresh fruit. You'll also want to stop eating processed foods. They're full of junk and don't do any favors for your skin. Amp up your diet with antioxidants. These are superheroes when it comes to anti-aging, as they get rid of damaging free radicals. Foods rich in antioxidants include: Beans Spinach Spinach Tomatoes Blueberries 3. Drink More Water The sad reality is, most people don't drink enough water throughout the day. Water is one of the most important things that sustain us, so make sure you drink up! Drinking more water has several health benefits, such as higher energy levels, weight loss help, headache prevention, and more. Water can also give your skin a much younger and more beautiful look! This is because it plumps up your skin, making it look full and lively. As a result, this also keeps fine lines and wrinkles away. Fun fact: many people mistake thirst as hunger pangs. So the next time you feel hungry, try drinking some water first. Not only will you listen to your body better, but you'll also improve your skin and lose some weight in the process too! 4. Get Enough Sleep Sleep is when your body repairs itself and your mind gets a much-needed break. You might think nothing of pulling 3 all-nighters in a row to catch up with work, but that'll quickly take its toll on you. Not only will you feel exhausted, but it'll also wreak havoc on your skin. You see, we have a stress hormone called cortisol. When we go to sleep, our cortisol levels go down and our growth hormone levels go up. What this means is the optimal repair for your cells. So if you deprive yourself of 8 hours of sleep every night, you're sabotaging your skin. It won't have the chance to repair itself fully and it won't be as radiant as it could be! While we're on the subject of sleep, switch to silk pillowcases. This material is gentler and can prevent fine lines and wrinkles. It's also better for your hair! 5. Keep Your Face Clean You should be washing your face once after waking up and again before you sleep. Pick the right cleanser for your skin type for the best results possible. During the day, don't touch your face. Your hands are full of bacteria and can also cause breakouts. 6. Moisturize Often Drinking plenty of water will definitely help your skin look better. But give it a little help by moisturizing often. In general, you should moisturize both day and night. This should be done after washing your face since the water and products will dry your skin out. On that note, don't use too many products, as it can be too harsh on your skin and cause more harm than good. 7. Schedule Regular Facials There are plenty of things you can do at home to keep your face looking youthful. But if you want to prevent wrinkles, the key is scheduling professional facials as part of your skincare routine. These experts have the skills and tools to upgrade your skincare routine and ensure that you look as young as possible. When you go for a facial, there are multiple steps in the treatment. • Sunny Day Skin Care: The Importance of SPF for Your Skin

Whether it's a bright and sunny day or a gloomy, overcast afternoon, wearing quality sunscreen or skincare products with SPF is crucial when it comes to protecting your skin. You may see all kinds of products available that claim to have sun-protecting properties, so why is this ingredient such a crucial part of a good skincare routine? Read on to learn more about the importance of SPF for your face and body and how it protects you. Healthy Sun Protection Whenever you go outside, it's a good idea to apply either sunscreen or a product that contains SPF to protect your skin. These products don't just keep you safe from sunburn - they also help to promote a more even complexion. When it comes to uneven skin tones or patchiness, sun damage is the main culprit. That's why choosing an effective sunscreen can help your skin retain its even, healthy glow. Of course, the sun can do much more than just make your skin appear patchy. Too much exposure to the sun's UV rays can cause premature aging or even worse - skin cancer. Wearing products that contain SPF on a sunny day will protect your skin from the sun's broad spectrum of harsh and dangerous UV rays. This ingredient minimizes the ability of UV rays to penetrate into your skin, and it may also help to prevent the triggering of specific skin disorders. Even if you have a rare, mild sunburn, it can have long-lasting and damaging effects. The best rule of thumb is to make wearing sunscreen a part of your daily routine. Should You Only Use Sunscreen on a Sunny Day? When you think of applying sunscreen, you probably imagine a day at the beach or an afternoon lounging by the pool. However, it's best to apply sunscreen or products that contain SPF to your skin every day, regardless of the weather. Even when it's cloudy outside, the sun is still producing harmful rays. In fact, you can still get a sunburn or sun damage, even when it's overcast and gloomy. UV radiation can easily penetrate through the clouds and affect the health of your skin. If you don't apply SPF every day, you're increasing your risk of skin damage and potentially, skin cancer that may present itself later in life. Up to 80-percent of UV rays can be absorbed by your skin when it's overcast. Snow can actually make things worse since the reflection can double the amount of UV radiation. People with pale skin should be especially vigilant when it comes to wearing sunscreen. What Type of Products Contain SPF? No matter what skin type you have, it's important to choose products that have SPF as part of the ingredients. You can find everything from facial moisturizer to foundation that may include some level of SPF. Generally, anything that contains between 15 and 50 SPF can provide you with adequate protection against the sun. Look for moisturizers or tinted creams that incorporate some form of sun protection into their formulas. Of course, if you're planning to spend lots of time outside on a sunny day, you should apply a true sunscreen to the rest of your body. Make sure that you get it on your neck, back, and shoulders if you're gearing up for a day outdoors. Some products have ingredients that will protect you from the sun's UVA and UVB rays. This means you'll get the maximum protection you need to prevent sunburn, skin damage, and wrinkles. These products may have the words "broad spectrum" on the packaging, which means they include protection against both UVA and UVB exposure. If you have a fair skin tone or are prone to getting sunburn easily, choose skincare products with a higher level of SPF protection. Generally, anything between 30 and 50 SPF for your face and/or body is a good choice. The Importance of SPF UVA rays make up most of the light that reaches your skin. That's because these rays have a long wavelength that can penetrate more deeply into the layers of the skin. Only light has to be present for UVA rays to affect you, which means that it doesn't always have to be a completely sunny day for your skin to be affected. Even if you're indoors all day, UVA rays can penetrate window glass, so it's a good idea to use sun protection every day, even when you're inside. So, what causes your skin to become damaged after sun exposure? Over time, the UVA rays penetrate the dermis, which is what causes uneven skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Using sunblock or products with SPF will help to keep these harmful rays from penetrating into your skin. They either absorb, reflect, or scatter the light away from your skin to help you stay safe and healthy. No matter what type of products you use and how often you apply them, you can still experience sun-related damage over time. Increase your protection and minimize your exposure by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and light clothing any time you go outside. Sun Protection for All Whether it's a sunny day or a little overcast, it's always a great time to wear sunscreen or some form of sun protection. With the right products and daily application, you can help mitigate the sun's damage to your skin.
