  • What are Enlarged Pores and How To Shrink Them

Looking for that blurred skin look -- you know the flawless, airbrushed glow? Of course, you are -- it’s a high request that we receive at Pretty Please all the time. Our Founder, Jennifer Rasa encounters this request during skin consultations from clients looking to shrink their pores or get rid of them altogether. While you can’t exactly erase pores, you can tighten and shrink their appearance with a healthy skin regimen and a professional touch. So, let's get into what causes large pores and what you can do to reduce the appearance to achieve smooth flawless skin. What are Pores? Pores are small openings in the skin that contains a sebaceous gland that produces sebum. These tiny gateways provide a path for sebum to reach the top of the skin and lubricate the surface. The trouble occurs when dead skin and free radicals block the opening, causing congestion and oil build-up. This congestion can lead to textured skin and breakouts. Do Pores Open And Close? If you mean “shrink and enlarge”, then yes, but our Pretty Please Founder, Jennifer Rasa, says, “despite this myth, pores do not open and close, they’re always open, which is healthy for your skin”. Pores play the role of helping your skin stay moisturized -- without them, your skin would sadly dry out, so think of pores as your “frenemy”. With that being said your pores can shrink and enlarge in size depending on the health of your skin. What Causes Large Pores? Enlarged pores are caused by a few factors -- congestion, the aging process, and also genetics. Here’s a breakdown of how each one can produce enlarged pores. 1. Oil + Impurities A mixture of dirt, oil, and environmental impurities can throw your skin pH off balance as well as allow those impurities to sink deeper into your pores causing congestion. Once your skin experiences congestion, that clogged pore is now blocking the exit for natural sebum to be released. When this happens, your skin will overproduce sebum which causes the skin/pore to expand for the sebum to be released and finally flow freely. This problem also causes oily skin -- it simply becomes a chain reaction. 2. Aging With aging, the skin produces less collagen and elasticity. The skin around your pores loses its firmness and the ability to bounce back -- which causes the pore to expand and stay enlarged. 3. Genetics + Skin Type A lot of our skin issues are genetic based, so you may be predisposed to larger pores but that doesn’t mean this issue can’t be treated. Your skin type is also a key factor --those with oily skin tend to overproduce sebum naturally, increasing the chances of clogged and enlarged pores. The Best Products Shrink Large Pores Now that you know the ways enlarged pores can be developed, we put together a few tips and regimens you can use to treat the problem. Again while you can’t make large pores disappear completely, you can reduce their appearance. Using chemical exfoliators, clarifying cleansers, and nourishing toners can assist with treating this issue. 1. Chemical Exfoliants Lactic Acid is a great chemical exfoliant that is used to remove dead skin cells and reduce blockage. The first step to minimizing pores is to clear build-up and congestion, so keeping your pores clean will combat the need for your pores to expand any further. Our Skin Experts at Pretty Please would recommend our Triple Layer Facial to exfoliate your skin, removing dry, dead skin for a clean and clear look and feel. 2. Clarifying Cleansers A deep cleanse is just what your skin needs to tackle any dirt and oil build-up. Clarifying cleansers will treat excess oil production and the loss of elasticity. If you pair a deep cleanse with lactic acid treatment, you will be giving your skin/pores an overload of skincare goodness! 3. A Pore-fect Toner Reach for a nourishing and refreshing toner to maintain your exfoliated and deeply cleansed skin. A travel-size toner to use while on the go is perfect to keep your skin in check. Using a toner with peppermint, glycolic acid, and aloe vera will keep your skin balanced, and clear your pores throughout the day. A few spritzes will also re-energize properties to give your skin a bright and radiant glow. Skin Care Routine For Large Pores When thinking about your day-to-day skincare routine, you have a cleanser, exfoliator, toner, serum, and moisturizer - right? So there’s not much adjusting in the routine as much as changing up the products. You can easily minimize the look of large pores with a targeted routine. For those of you who are new to skincare, we put together a little step-by-step regimen for you. 1. Cleanse & Exfoliate To Unclog Pores Above we discussed the combo between lactic acid and a deep cleanse. For this, we would recommend a serum that has lactic acid as a key ingredient and pair it with a clarifying cleanse using a glycolic based cleanser. This combo is ideal for those with oily skin as well, because having a cleansing and exfoliation combo are essential steps for enlarged pores. This routine will remove sebum from the skin’s surface and relieve pore congestion, allowing your pores to shrink to their normal size. 2. Minimize Pores With A Toner Reach for your “pore-fect” toner as this is a step you don’t want to skip. After a deep cleanse and exfoliation, your skin will need to be replenished. Using the right toner can balance your skin complexion, and provide a layer of hydration. 3. A Detox Facial If you have extra time and you’re in the mood for a little pampering, treat yourself to a detoxing face mask. Clay or charcoal-based masks are always a great start to exfoliate the skin, as they absorb excess oils and deep clean pores. However, if you’re in the mood for a professional touch, we offer an Organic Peel at Pretty Please that can be added on to any signature facial for an extra detox treatment to your skin. 4. Moisturize Yes, even if you have oily skin, moisturizing is a must! Moisturizers are more than just a form of hydration; they offer nourishing ingredients that all skin-types benefit from. Jennifer Rasa would recommend using an oil-free moisturizer if oily skin is your skin-type. She would suggest leaning towards a gel-based moisturizer to hydrate and neutralize your skin. Have we answered all your pore related questions? Feel free to reach out to one of our Skin Experts if you have more questions or set up a skin consultation at our NY location.

  • How to Treat Sunburn

We’re all aware of the damage the sun can do to our skin, however, there are still people who are out and about in the sun without any skin protection. The importance of protecting your skin from harmful UV-rays can not only prevent an unsightly sunburn but also protect you from permanent damage that can resurface years down the line. Our team of Skin Experts at Pretty Please understand the importance of protecting your skin from harsh UV-rays, the importance of applying the appropriate skincare products with sunscreen, as well as limiting your time in the sun. We make it a standard to inform our clients of the importance of protecting their skin while receiving facial treatments. What causes a Sunburn? A sunburn is a small to large area of damaged skin caused by UV-rays from the sun. When your skin is exposed to UV rays, it releases a pigment called melanin to protect itself, as melanin acts as a natural sunscreen by absorbing the energy from UV rays and redistributing it. However, it can only provide so much protection - this is why it’s important to monitor how much time you’re spending in the sun, take breaks and of course wear sunscreen. When your skin has been triggered by sunburn, your body produces inflammatory mediators that increase blood flow in the affected area(s). This action causes sunburn’s characteristic of redness, swelling, and irritation. Why Are Sunburns Bad? What makes sunburns the ultimate skin no-no, aside from its immediate pain and discomfort, is the long-lasting damage to the skin. It can cause premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, and sunspots. The excess exposure can also lead to the development of skin cancer. Sunburn Severity Sunburns can range in severity, from mild burns that fade quickly to more severe burns that can require treatment from a physician. Mild Mild sunburns typically last between three and five days. They are accompanied by redness, tenderness, and slight pain. Moderate Moderate sunburns tend to be more painful and can take up to two weeks to heal completely. They are characterized by vibrant redness, swelling, heat, and small blisters. Severe Severe sunburns require a visit to a doctor. These burns are accompanied by red to purplish discoloration, large painful blisters, and symptoms such as chills, nausea, and dehydration. Symptoms Of Sunburned Skin If you believe you’re experiencing the effects of sunburned skin, here are a few symptoms for mild cases to look out for: Redness, pain and/or tenderness, heat, itchiness/irritation, swelling, small blisters However, if you experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is recommended that you visit a doctor: Fever, Faintness, Rapid pulse, Nausea, Chills, Confusion, Large, painful blisters Ways To Protect Your Skin There are a few ways to protect your skin before, during, and after sun exposure. 1. Before Sun Exposure Sunscreen is an absolute must! Chemical sunscreens are “absorbers” that convert UV rays into heat before releasing them from the skin. While physical sunscreens create a protective barrier that blocks and reflects UV rays before they make contact with the skin’s surface. No matter which you choose, our Pretty Please Founder would recommend reaching for a broad-spectrum formula that will protect against both UVA and UVB rays. If you’re wondering about SPF, an SPF of 30 is ideal. 2. During Sun Exposure To avoid sun damage, you must continue to protect your skin throughout the day. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Seek shade between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM, when UV rays are at their most intense, try to find a shady area to walk along or keep an umbrella handy if you’re sunbathing. Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sun-protective clothing. One application of sunscreen does not last all day -- reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, or after 40 minutes if you’re swimming. Retreat at the first sign of sunburn. After Sun Exposure: What Helps Sunburn? So let’s say you took all the necessary precautions, but notice symptoms of sunburn a day or two later. We’ve all been there, so there’s no judging from us-- here’s what to do to treat your sunburn, if and when this happens: 1. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! After experiencing a sunburn your body will require replenishing from the inside out. Drink a lot of water, as well as nourish your skin with topical hydration. We would recommend aloe vera or serums with hyaluronic acid to moisturize and soothe the irritated area. 2. Cool Your Skin Down After a sunburn, it’s important to cool your skin down. You can take a cool bath or apply a cold compress to soothe redness and inflammation. However, we suggest skipping the use of soap, even a mild one. 3. Soothe & Repair Sunburn can leave your skin red, dry, and irritated. To treat the dryness, reach for moisturizing oils that include soothing ingredients such as rosemary, rosehip, and tea tree. With that, you want to avoid thicker oils/jellies like petroleum jelly, which can smother the infected area and exacerbate your symptoms. 4. Don’t Pick We know it can be tempting, but it’s best to allow the area to heal naturally on its own. As your skin heals, healthy skin cells rise to the surface and the sun-damaged cells naturally flake and peel off. These new cells are delicate and susceptible to irritation, so picking and prodding will only make your sunburn look and feel worse. 5. Apply A Vitamin C Serum You can minimize the visible signs of sun exposure by applying a vitamin C serum to your skincare routine daily. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps protect cells from free radical damage, and it also promotes collagen production in the skin. By applying this serum you’re helping to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. 6. Treat your Entire Body Spoil your skin with a full body rub down with tea tree oil and aloe vera. If moisturizing your skin in aloe vera isn’t doing the trick, book a professional body treatment at your favorite spa. If you’re interested in booking a facial to treat sunburn symptoms, one of our amazing Skin Experts would be more than welcome to give you a consultation on the best course of action for your treatment. • The Beauty Junkie’s Guide To Avoid Ruining Your Skin Care Products

Turns out, keeping your skincare favorites fresh is simple - as long as you follow these healthy skin rules. Come on, confess, how many of you keep your favorite skincare products beyond their expiration date knowing that it’s probably bad for your skin? I admit, if I’m spending top dollars on skincare, I would like to keep these investment pieces as long as possible. But how bad can keeping skincare products beyond the expiration date really be for your skin? Unsurprisingly, tossing products past its prime time is part of a healthy skincare routine. Over time, skincare products will be exposed to air, light, moisture, and bacteria causing the products to degrade naturally. The first signs of a product starting to expire include the presence of bacteria and mold, oils becoming rancid, active ingredients losing their potency, and ingredients such as retinol and Vitamin C oxidizing. In some cases, expired products can cause skin irritation and breakouts which simply means that the active ingredients designed to tackle your skin concerns are no longer effective. For your skin care routine to work its’ magic, it’s important to follow this guide to keep your favorite skincare products fresh for longer! Tip 1. Wash Your Face and Hands Practice basic hygiene by washing your face and hands before using any skincare products! Dirt and grime will settle on top of skin throughout the day, so it’s important to wash your face and hands when waking up, before bed, and after sweating. Eminence Organics products makes it easier to be hygienic by including a mini spatula with select items to not only keep the skin products clean, but it also scoops the right amount of product out for a perfect application every time. However, it is still a good practice to frequently wash your hands as it will limit bacteria transferring to your products and face. Tip 2. Avoid Exposure To Moisture The steam from your shower is not doing your products any favors as water can condense on the surface of certain products and will generate mold. To prevent bacteria and mold build-up, we recommend storing products with a powder base or anything that doesn’t have a really strong seal like Eminence Organics’ Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant ($48 at shop.prettypleaseny.com) and Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant ($52 at shop.prettypleaseny.com) in a dry, dark area. Tip 3. Store Skin Care Products In A Dry, Dark Area Direct sunlight and heat can accelerate the aging process of a product and break down its’ active ingredients. Countertops and vanities that are not next to a window are passable, but it’s usually best to keep your skincare products in a cabinet or drawer where the sun’s rays can’t reach them. Tip 4. Ensure Your Products Are Properly Sealed Products that are properly sealed and preserved will act as a line of defense from natural elements like air, water, and unwanted germs getting in. It’s an important yet simple step to maintain the consistency and shelf life of the item! Think about the last time you forgot to put the top back on your toothpaste: its’ smooth texture developed a crust a few minutes after it has been exposed to air. Depending on the ingredients in a product, skincare items that are not properly sealed can become dry and harden when left open. Products with a pump like Stone Crop Cleansing Oil ($52 at shop.prettypleaseny.com) are sealed and are less likely to be exposed to bacteria compared to containers that requires you to use your fingers. Tip 5. Maintain Products At A Consistent Temperature Consistency is key! A surefire way to ruin your products is to flip flop between temperatures and one of the best things you can do to maintain the shelf life of your favorite items is to maintain a consistent temperature. This will help conserve the active ingredients in products and keep them fresh for longer. “Using a chilled eye cream can help with puffiness and encourage circulation,” explains Alicia Hawthorne, Eminence Organics’ Product Support Representative. There’s no harm in storing a few of your favorites in the fridge, however, allow some buffer time before toting these items on a tropical vacation! Tip 6. Less Is More With an overload of information and new products launching every other day in today’s world, it may be extremely easy to add the newest and trendiest item into your routine or hold onto products for too long, especially if they aren’t used regularly. While we love a good #shelfie, make sure you aren’t overloading your face with an excess of skincare products. More isn’t necessarily better, and if you’re using something a few times a year, odds are it’s time to toss it. As for the products you apply regularly, it’s likely you’ll use them up before they have a chance to expire! When To Marie Kondo Your Skin Care Routine It’s natural for organic skincare products to lose their freshness over time. It’s important to assess your skin concerns and check in every six to twelve months to update your skincare routine. Items from Eminence Organics are typically the freshest in the first 12 to 15 months after purchase. Don’t forget to thank and say farewell to the tossed items, Marie-Kondo style! Once you notice discoloration, a funky odor or a peculiar change in texture whether it’s lumpy or runny, this may be a sign that the skincare product is starting to expire. To note, it is common for the natural and organic ingredients in Eminence Organics to have different colors, scent, and texture from batch to batch. If you aren’t sure about the state of your skincare product, feel free to reach out to our team and we’ll be happy to guide you! If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, Pretty Please’s team of licensed estheticians offers a wide range of effective facials and treatments using Eminence Organics’ Pro-Line. • How To Improve Skin Texture

Acne free even-toned glowing skin without a pore in sight, is ideal when thinking about your skin goals. It’s no secret that we’re all pining over smooth skin, but the reality is that most of us experience an uneven skin texture. At Pretty Please, our Skin Experts notice the common concern is everyone wanting to improve the texture of their skin. Many suffer from having a flaky, rough or bumpy complexion, large pores or acne scarring. Whether your concern is due to acne, aging or pore size, texture issues can leave skin looking dull and less youthful. With the decade of experience our Founder, Jennifer Rasa, at Pretty Please has curated a list of treatment options to assist our clients with reaching their skin goals. We offer a variety of facials and treatments to improve the texture of your skin and restore your glow. Before treating your skin, it’s best to know what’s causing texture and dullness, so here’s our guide to what causes uneven skin texture and how to fix it. Causes of Uneven Skin Texture Over your lifetime, your skin will go through many changes that affect and alter its surface. These are the most common causes of uneven skin texture: 1. Dry skin Dry skin is a common cause of uneven skin texture. Lacking moisture in the skin can cause dead skin cells to build on the skin’s surface, making it appear rough, flaky and dull. Treating your dry skin will require a 2-step regimen of exfoliating and moisturizing. Regular exfoliation with a physical or chemical exfoliant will remove dead skin and nourish healthy cells hidden beneath. Following up with a moisturizer that is rich in active ingredients and fatty acids will not only replenish moisture but also strengthen your skin’s lipid barrier. Together, these steps keep skin soft, smooth and supple. Adding a monthly facial to your routine will also enhance the texture of your skin, and we have just the facial for you! Facial Recommendation: Keep Calm Facial - this facial will gently exfoliate and replenish moisture with rosehip oil. 2. Acne-prone skin When you think of bumpy rough skin texture, you immediately think of acne-prone skin. From small raised pimples to large inflamed acne, all types of blemishes can cause a bumpy and irregular skin texture. Depending on the severity of your acne, these could be isolated to one area or cover your entire complexion. Acne is triggered by excess oil, bacteria, hormones, and genetics. The struggle with acne-prone skin is that large pores become congested and the combination of oil, dead skin and bacteria leads to breakouts. Using salicylic acid has become an effective way for treating acne because the gentle BHA clears blocked pores, calms irritated skin and prevents future breakouts. Using skincare products with salicylic acid will contribute to a smoother, more even complexion. Our product recommendation: The Acne Advanced 3-Step Treatment System from Eminence Organics 3. Acne Scarring Acne-prone skin sadly likes to leave behind a reminder of its presence even after treating your acne problems. Acne scarring can occur from picking and popping, or sometimes just an occurrence due to the melanin in your skin. As acne heals, your skin elicits an inflammatory response to repair the damaged tissue, which can disrupt the production of collagen, causing indented scars to sink into the skin. Improving acne scars and smoothing out your texture can be done using a chemical exfoliant like lactic acid, it’s an AHA and used to refine your skin’s surface. Ingredients like Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are perfect to improve elasticity and plump your complexion -- both should also be added to your skincare regimen. Facial Recommendation: Clear it & Glow Facial 4. Fine Lines & Wrinkles Treating fine lines and wrinkles may seem impossible to some because as you age, your skin’s collagen and elasticity deplete. Skin cell turnover slows down and your complexion becomes increasingly dry and rough. Without a proper skin care regimen, and professional treatments, your skin may develop a variety of wrinkles, from crow’s feet and laugh lines to gravitational folds. At Pretty Please we have an anti-aging facial that we recommend to our clients who are looking to restore firmness in their skin. The Blueberry Detox Firming Facial is great for rejuvenating your skin and works to decrease puffiness and stimulates collagen. Our Founder Jennifer Rasa would also recommend products with peptides because, in the process of stimulating collagen and elastin production, peptides diminish the look of wrinkles and promote firmer, more resilient skin. Product Pick: Eminence Organics Marine Flower Peptide Serum 5. Large Pores If you’re struggling with large pores, this section is just for you. While it’s believed that pore size is determined by genetics, they can become enlarged due to congestion and the aging process. When oil and dirt clog your pores, the diameter of the opening actually expands. As you age and your skin has less elasticity, it loses the ability to “bounce back,” and pores become even more prominent. For this type of skin problem, you want to first clear your congested pores and improve elasticity. Using a clarifying cleanser will offer a deep cleanse and unclog pores. Following that up with a chemical exfoliant like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to dissolve the barrier that holds dead skin cells on the skin’s surface and helps to keep pores clean. Professional Treatments To Improve Skin Texture. In addition to your skincare regimen at home, we would recommend a professional’s touch from time to time. A monthly facial will help create healthy skin, treat your skin concerns and boost your glow. Scheduling a one-on-one consultation with one of our estheticians is essential to creating your new skin journey. Here are a few professional treatments we offer at Pretty Please: Microdermabrasion Microdermabrasion is a type of physical exfoliation that uses a specialized device to buff away the surface layer of the skin. As dead skin is cleared away, this process reveals new skin cells that look and feel smoother. Professional Peels Chemical Peels would be considered a powerful and concentrated version of your at-home exfoliant. They deliver a high percentage of active ingredients to break the bonds that hold dead skin cells on your skin’s surface. These peels typically employ fruit acids such as papaya or pineapple which, in addition to exfoliating skin, are rich antioxidants that minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. If you’re looking for even more solutions to smooth your skin’s texture? Book a one-on-one session with our talented team members at Pretty Please NY for a facial.

  • How To Treat your Skin during Pregnancy

So you’re a Mommy-to-bee? How exciting -- and you’re here to learn more about skincare during pregnancy and how to treat melasma? Perfect! Let us give you all the information you’ll need to treat, manage and pamper your skin while combating any signs of melasma. At Pretty Please, we believe beauty doesn’t have an age limit, and it doesn’t stop during the wonderful stage of creating life. Our Founder Jennifer Rasa has decades of experience treating a wide range of skin concerns, so treating signs of “pregnancy mask” is a treatment that you can discuss with Jennifer or one of our lovely skin experts. We understand that with pregnancy comes change, especially in the look and feel of your skin. The idea of your “pregnancy glow” being overshadowed by hyperpigmentation, is more common than you think. About 70% of women experience darkening around the upper lip, cheeks, and forehead during pregnancy, so you are not alone. Figuring out your skincare routine any time can be overwhelming, but skincare during pregnancy? This introduces a whole new set of concerns. During pregnancy, your skin can change in several ways and can behave completely differently than it normally would. Here’s a breakdown of what you could potentially experience during your pregnancy. During And After Pregnancy: Clear, Smooth Skin Hormonal acne can be extremely frustrating to deal with since it fluctuates throughout pregnancy as well as after giving birth and breastfeeding. During pregnancy, the “pregnancy hormones” increase the number of oil glands in your face and while this leads to that beautiful “pregnancy glow”, the excess oil can clog the pores, leading to a surge of hormonal breakouts. Also after giving birth, estrogen levels drop and testosterone levels increase, which can also lead to excessive pimples as the body tries to regulate itself. Pretty Please Founder Jennifer Rasa says, it’s important to treat those hormonal breakouts with products and treatments like personalized facials to assist with stabilizing the excessive oil production that can occur during pregnancy. It’s not only beneficial for improving the look of hormonal blemishes but also improves your skin overall. What Is Melasma? Patches of discoloration that appear during pregnancy are known as melasma or the `mask of pregnancy’. In some women, these patches of pigment will be light and barely visible, however, in others, they will be darker and more prominent. For most, melasma will emerge early on in pregnancy and fade after delivery. Signs Common signs of melasma are brown or gray-colored splotches that are darker than your usual skin color. Unlike age spots and freckles, patches of melasma tend to be large and symmetrical. This type of discoloration typically appears in these areas Cheeks Forehead Bridge of the nose Upper lip Chin What Causes It? Melasma (also known as chloasma) is a direct result of hormonal changes during pregnancy. When pregnancy hormones spike, they stimulate melanogenesis - the production of melanin. Melanin is the substance that gives our hair, eyes, and skin their color, and as its production increases, existing freckles and moles become more pronounced and new dark spots and patches emerge. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 90% of people who develop melasma are female. It tends to run in families, and darker skin tones are more prone to developing symptoms due to having natural melanocytes. Since it is triggered by hormonal fluctuations, melasma can also occur when you start or stop using hormonal contraception or undergo hormone replacement therapy. How To Minimize Melasma Folic Acid A proper diet can curb melasma. Eating foods high in folate (Vitamin B9) can replace the deficiency in folic acid, which is common in women who are pregnant or on birth control. Add citrus fruits, legumes, leafy greens, and whole-grain bread and cereals to your diet as well. You can also talk to your physician about taking a folic acid supplement. Avoid Sun Exposure Sun exposure can increase melasma symptoms. Limit your time spent in the sun and take the necessary precautions by applying an SPF with UVA and UVB protection. Instead of a chemical sunscreen, choose a mineral sunscreen that blocks, rather than absorbs, light and heat. Topical Skin Care Many dermatologists will prescribe bleaching agents, such as hydroquinone, to lighten the dark spots caused by melasma. This chemical compound inhibits the function of tyrosinase, the enzyme that signals the production of melanin in the skin’s melanocytes. By doing so, it reduces melanin production and fades hyperpigmentation. However, the safety and side effects of hydroquinone remain questionable; the chemical has been linked to several skin irritations as well as cases of over-lightening, resulting in white “halo” spots. For a safer option, swap out hydroquinone for natural alternatives like Vitamin E and C oil. Skin Care For Melasma Melasma is stubborn, but targeted skincare products and facials can minimize its appearance. At Pretty Please NY, our Skin Experts work with both products and high-end facial equipment to repair and rejuvenate skin. Again a safe way to minimize melasma is to do so with natural skin brighteners, so using the Bright Skin Collection from Eminence Organics, is a great start. It’s a full routine that includes a blend of natural ingredients that provide similar results to hydroquinone without the potentially negative effects. Here’s how each ingredient diminishes the look of dark spots: Bearberry Extract: Contains a natural form of hydroquinone and arbutin as melanin-inhibitors Licorice Root: Contains liquiritin and glabridin which disrupt melanin creation Tara Tree & African Potato: Reduce tyrosinase activity and hinder its development Gigawhite: Contains seven organically grown Swiss alpine plants that inhibit tyrosinase Also, using the Eight Greens Collection from Eminence Organics has been a great addition to our treatments to assist with melasma. This collection is plant-based making it safer to use on pigmentation issues. The Eight Greens Collection contains extracts of yucca, flaxseed, hops and red clover to help with a more even-looking complexion and it includes: Eight Greens Phyto Masque Eight Greens Whip Moisturizer Eight Greens Youth Serum If you would like to treat yourself or a Mommy-to-be to a facial or skin consultation, please book a one-on-one session with our talented team members at Pretty Please NY.

The right masks can tackle key skin concerns, improve chronic conditions, and leave you looking and feeling great. From dryness and dehydration to large pores and acne, read on to learn everything you need to know about face masks. We’ll talk about finding the right mask for your complexion and using it to leave your skin feeling beautiful. The Benefits of Face Masks There is no better way to take care of your skin than with a consistent routine that’s catered to your needs. Just as beneficial as serums and moisturizers, face masks are a skincare vehicle jam-packed with benefits. For starters, they deliver highly concentrated actives, vitamins, and nutrients to improve the overall health of your skin. Plus, they’re occlusive, meaning they create a physical barrier that locks in the beneficial ingredients. This allows them to absorb into your skin more efficiently. Face masks are used intermittently, designed to give your skin an instant boost. Their benefits are numerous but depend mostly on what your skin needs. That’s because you have the advantage of choosing from a wide selection of options that target one or a combination of the following: • Hydrate and moisturize dry or dehydrated skin • Shrink and refine large pores • Improve the skin’s texture • Absorb excess oil and dirt • Decongest clogged pores • Minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles • Enhance elasticity • Treat acne-prone skin and improve the look of breakouts • Brighten dark spots • Reduce redness Different Types of Face Masks When it comes to choosing a face mask, the endless options can be overwhelming. Don’t panic! We’ll break down the different types of masks to make the decision process a little less stressful. You’ll be on your way to naturally beautiful skin before you know it. Before we jump into the different uses of face masks, let’s talk about the different types. Most face masks fall into one of the following categories: • Sheet masks • Clay or mud masks • Cream masks • Peel-off masks • Gel masks • Charcoal Masks • Exfoliating Masks • Sleep masks Let’s take a closer look at each so that you can understand the difference. Sheet Masks Sheet masks have been popular for many years, with their origins in South Korea. They are the most versatile category of face masks available because they’re designed for every skin type. While some nourish and treat your whole face, others target specific areas. There are sheet masks on the market for your eyes, lips, feet, nose, and neck, to name a few. The cost of sheet masks can range from low to high. Prices vary depending on the fabric of the mask and the type of ingredients in the serum. They have set the trend in self-care across the world. You can do them with your friends, have a family mask night, or even pick up fun options with a different animal or character faces printed on the fabric. Clay or Mud Masks Clay and mud masks have been around for ages. It’s no secret that clay and mud are miracle workers for acne-prone skin. The absorbent, exfoliating, and astringent properties help these masks tackle the root causes of your acne. Additionally, they go on to treat symptoms such as excess oil and inflammation. A significant advantage of clay or mud masks is that they can double as a spot treatment. With just a tiny amount, you can spot-treat smaller areas that are bumpy or congested. Keep in mind that they can be drying, so consider other options if you have dry skin. Cream Masks If you have dry or dehydrated skin, cream masks are a heavenly treat. They have the texture of a rich moisturizer. They do wonders for hydrating the skin and bring back the skin’s natural nutrients. Cream masks leave the skin feeling plump, hydrated, and refreshed. They’re an excellent option for mature skin, but can be used by anyone looking to smooth and moisturize dry skin. Like clay or mud masks, cream masks can also be used to spot-treat dry patches. Peel-Off Masks Peel-off masks are another option for acne-prone skin. They help refine pores, treat blemishes, and provide a mild exfoliation when you peel them off. Some peel-off masks are like a mini facial! Just be careful when removing this type of mask. You don’t want to cause damage to the skin. Gel Masks Gel masks provide significant benefits to dry, dehydrated, inflamed, or irritated skin. They have a lightweight texture and are an excellent option for normal to oily and sensitive skin types. Most gel masks provide a cooling, soothing sensation. Many include astringent ingredients, like raspberries and blackberries, to minimize oil and tighten pores. Others are formulated to soothe and hydrate the skin. Charcoal Masks Charcoal masks aren’t exactly a type, but their rise in popularity has awarded them a category of their own. Charcoal masks come in a variety of options, but the common ingredient is activated charcoal. It’s a great choice for oily complexions and acne-prone skin because it detoxifies the skin. You can find activated charcoal in sheet masks, cream masks, peel-off masks, and mud masks. Exfoliating Masks Specially formulated to remove dead skin cells and promote your skin’s natural turnover process, exfoliating masks use finely ground particles to polish your skin gently. Exfoliating masks allow you to gently buff away dead skin cells, clearing up your skin’s surface. Keep in mind that using exfoliating masks improperly can lead to skin damage, increased redness, and acne breakouts. That’s why the American Academy of Dermatology suggests you consider your skin type before choosing an exfoliating mask and follow best practices to avoid skin damage. Sleep Masks Sleep masks provide the ultimate boost in hydration when you need it most. Whether your skin is feeling dull and dry or the weather is taking its toll, sleep masks are a great way to leave your skin feeling healthy and new. The Best Way to Use a Face Mask Now that you understand the different types of face masks let’s talk about how to use them. You don’t want to use them every day. We recommend adding a face mask to your skincare routine once or twice a week. For best results, apply your mask after properly cleaning, toning, and applying a facial essence. By clearing impurities and excess oil, you’re prepping your skin to absorb all the benefits of your mask fully. You should also provide a base layer of hydration to prep your skin for optimal absorption. Once you’ve prepped your skin, follow these tips to apply your mask properly: 1. Apply Your Mask Evenly It may be tempting to slather your skin with a thick layer of product, especially with hydrating masks. When it comes to face masks, however, more isn’t necessarily better. Sheet masks are pretty self-explainable and shaped to fit over your face. Other masks only require a quarter-sized amount to deliver results. Be sure to spread your mask in a very thin layer over your entire face. You can even use facial massage techniques to amp up the benefits of your mask. 2. Don’t Forget Your Neck and Décolleté Believe it or not, a quarter-sized amount should be plenty to cover your neck and décolletage. Don’t forget to care for these parts of your skin. Because they are exposed to environmental stress, these areas show visible signs of aging much earlier than the face. Give these areas a bit of extra attention because they are easily forgotten in daily skincare routines. 3. Let Your Mask Sit for 5-10 Minutes Pay close attention to the recommended mask duration. Most can be kept on for 10-15 minutes, but the duration varies from mask to mask. Some masks act quickly and should be removed after a short time to avoid irritation; others can be left on as an overnight treatment. Read the directions of your particular product. Set a timer, so you know exactly when to take it off. 4. Remove Masks Gently Many clients are tempted to scrub off their masks aggressively, which can undo the benefits. Be delicate with your skin. Use lukewarm water and a damp, clean, soft cloth to gently remove the mask. The Best Face Masks for Your Skin Type Most face masks are tailored to your skin type or intended to treat specific skin concerns. The best way to find a mask for your unique complexion is to have your skin assessed by a licensed esthetician at Pretty Please. If you’re looking to get started now, here are our best suggestions for each skin type: • Dry Skin: Eight Greens Phyto Masque • Oily Skin: Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque • Normal Skin: Stone Crop Masque • Combination Skin: Balancing Masque Duo • Sensitive Skin: Calm Skin Arnica Masque If you’re looking for masks that treat specific skin concerns and conditions, here are some suggestions: • Acne-prone skin: Acne Advanced Clarifying Masque • Aging Skin: Bamboo Age Corrective Masque • Hyperpigmentation: Bright Skin Licorice Root Exfoliating Peel • Large Pores: Clear Skin Probiotic Masque • Uneven Skin Tone: Rosehip and Maize Exfoliating Masque How to Double Benefits by Mixing Face Masks One of the best ways to harness the benefits of masks is to combine masks focused on your skin type with masks concentrated on your skin problems. Mixologies that layer and blend a variety of treatments help restore your skin to its healthiest, most beautiful state. There are several ways to mix and match your face masks. Here are some tips and tricks from the Pretty Please team that’ll help you whip up your favorite facial treat: Layering When you apply one mask, then layer another directly on top of it, you can optimize your results. The trick with effectively layering your masks is to choose two options that complement each other. If you layer masks that have opposite effects, you’ll cancel out their benefits. For example, layering a clay mask over a hydrating mask will soak up all the moisturizing effects of the hydrating mask. Blending Some face masks complement each other so well that you can blend them. When it comes to mixing, it’s best to choose two masks that have the same consistency. For example, two gel masks that compliment each other or two cream masks that complement each other. Simply mix a quarter-sized amount of each mask in your hands with two to three drops of water. Multi-Masking Applying different masks to different areas of the face simultaneously is called multi-masking. This method is useful for combination skin because it allows you to treat multiple skin concerns at once. For example, you can use an oil-control mask on your oily T-Zone and a hydrating mask on dry cheeks. Our Balancing Masque Duo is made for multi-masking. You’ll see that one side of the jar contains a Charcoal T-Zone purifier that focuses on oil control, refining large pores, and clearing impurities. The other side of the jar contains Pomelo Cheek Treatment. This moisturizes cheeks and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Back-to-Back You can also apply two face masks, one after the other. The process is simple. Apply one mask, remove it after the recommended duration, then apply a second mask immediately after. The best way to get results with this method is to follow up one mask with a second one that’ll provide additional benefits. Do you have a favorite mask mixology combination? Can you offer advice on tips and tricks that have helped you get better results with your face masks? We love to hear from our clients!

  • How to Treat Cystic and Hormonal Acne

Our Experts Top Do's And Don'ts Remember when we believed that acne went away? Oh, what a time! As you age, there are certain things you come to expect with your skin – dehydration, fine lines, wrinkles, and even hyperpigmentation. However, did you ever think cystic or hormonal acne was still going to be a thing? At Pretty Please, we can relate to acne of any kind being unbearable at the moment, but we also know how to treat and repair your skin, especially those suffering from cystic and hormonal acne. Our Skin Experts have decades of experience and have seen their fair share of acne nightmares, so having targeted treatments available to offer our clients is essential. Our Founder, Jennifer Rasa, would suggest our ‘Clear it and Glow Facial’, which targets acne, and there’s also an option for LED Light therapy or microdermabrasion to help lighten blemishes. The key to clearing your skin is consistency and patience, and our team at Pretty Please would love to join you on the journey to clear, gorgeous skin. So if you’re looking for beneficial ways to treat your skin, we have you covered! While it’s important to know what you’re dealing with, knowing how to treat your skin issues is essential to eradicate breakouts. Although cystic and hormonal acne can be a pain, we want you to approach your treatment with optimism and excitement! You’re about to meet the new you, so let this journey be one you can look forward to. Differences Between Cystic and Hormonal Acne Understanding why your breakouts are occurring will allow you to determine the best option for treatment. While hormonal acne is seen in both women and men going through significant hormonal changes like aging, pregnancy or even stress – cystic acne occurs at any age as a result of dietary sensitivities and an overproduction of sebum. For those reasons, treating these two different types of problems often requires unique acne treatments. There are a few distinctive differences to help you determine if your skin problem is more cyclical or caused by something like an increase of sebum or inflammation at a deeper level in the skin. To make determining the two easier, we put together a list for you to compare your symptoms to: Cystic Acne ● Appears predominantly on the face and T-zone, as well as the back, chest, and shoulders. ● Typically larger than your traditional pimple but more painful and red. ● Cystic acne treatments are required as it doesn’t go away on its own. (picking at breakouts also leads to increased risks of scarring and hyperpigmentation around irritated areas.) ● Some cystic acne breakouts are a result of poor diet – particularly when eating too much dairy. ● Breakouts happen at any age but especially during the teenage years. Hormonal Acne ● Women typically see acne during changes in hormone levels – around menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and menopause. ● Men who experience a drop in testosterone could also experience hormonal acne. ● Stress causes a change in hormone levels, increasing the development of skin breakouts. ● Hormonal acne occurs around the chin, jawline, and neck. These two types of skin problems are significantly different, so the approach for treating them needs to be different as well. Targeting cystic acne requires exfoliation using a gentle formula, as well as a cleanser that works deep within pores to eradicate bacteria and soothe inflammation. For managing cystic acne, using two skincare regimens is needed. To ensure your skin combats and treats cystic acne, it’s important to use products that target the problem areas while also providing nourishment that the skin needs to stay clean and clear. Pretty Please Skincare founder, Jennifer Rasa, would recommend products to reduce oils as well as break down the excess barrier of sebum. Clarifying products are your go-to -- think of ingredients like tea tree oil, sweet almond oil, cucumber, and peppermint to assist with achieving a deep cleanse. Using a probiotic cleanser and pair it with a serum will help with both cleansing and hydrating the skin. Treating hormonal acne is more about overall skincare and wellness routine. This is where self-care becomes key -- reducing the stress that changes your hormone balance can play a role in your skin misbehaving. However, if you’re tasked to treat hormonal acne on your own, a good routine includes products that target your skin concerns and reduces bacteria in pores while also hydrating and nourishing skin. For these types of hormonal break-outs, the Founder of Pretty Please, Jennifer Rasa would recommend a routine of luxurious facial masks. FYI: luxury can be a state of mind, you’re allowed to feel luxurious in the comfort of your own home *wink*. So please, grab a clarifying facial mask, and spoil yourself to a moment of self-care as well as treating your skin. Clarifying masks are designed to treat and prevent acne, so whether you experience cystic acne or more so regular hormonal acne, a 3-step system will work to cleanse/clarify, treat and hydrate to give you a beautiful and breakout-free complexion. Do's And Don’ts Okay ladies and maybe a few of you fellas, here’s the part where you might cringe at the DON’TS because it’s all the things that you DO. No worries, this is a judge-free zone! We’re here to help, and make sure you move forward with all the tips and tools you need to achieve clean, clear healthy skin. So when you have a breakout, poking at it or trying to speed up its lifecycle is a recipe for disaster. We know...it’s soooo tempting, but not worth the aftermath. Keep these tips in mind when managing your skin problems, no matter if it’s cystic or hormonal. *DO keep your skin clean with a consistent and clarifying skincare routine. Exfoliating keeps pores from getting clogged while clarifying formulas that remove bacteria that lead to breakouts. (gentle exfoliation only) *DON’T pick at pimples or breakouts -- picking spreads bacteria, which leads to more breakouts, and increases the risk of scarring or infection. *DO use serums that target your skin concerns. Ingredients in serums, such as tea tree oil and willow bark will clarify pores and prevent bacteria growth. Say hello to healthier and clearer skin with consistent use! *DON’T scrub. Instead of aggressively scrubbing with harsh physical exfoliants, opt for a gentle cleanser, rinse with lukewarm water and apply a chemical exfoliant/serum to further treat and prevent the issue. Whew, we know that was a lot but knowing what your skincare issues are and how to treat them will kickstart your healthy skin journey today! If you’re looking for an in-depth skincare routine or maybe you want a hands-on luxurious facial, book a professional facial with one of our amazing Skin Experts at Pretty Please in New York City.

  • How To Do A Spa-Level Facial Massage At Home

Have you ever admired your skin after a facial and thought, “but that glow, though!”. Feels and looks stunning, right? (whispering) Well, we’re about to let you in on a little secret-- one of the keys to glowing, ageless skin, is a well-executed facial massage. At Pretty Please, we believe your skin is the entrance to the world, so make your entrance flawlessly. We provide top of the line skincare services to rejuvenate and revitalize your skin while also offering professional tips. Not only are our hands gifted, but our team is well-versed on skincare concerns, conditions and can walk you through a regimen to achieve healthier, youthful skin. If you can’t make it to us in New York City, this post is just for you. We’re going to give you the tips and tools you’ll need to give yourself a Pretty Please spa-like massage in the comfort of your own home. What's a Facial Massage? Founder & Skin Therapist, Jennifer Rasa, of Pretty Please Skincare understands the importance of skin maintenance, but who said maintenance has to be a chore. The art of facial massaging not only reduces tension, which is a contributor to fine lines and wrinkles but also plays a part in de-stressing which increases blood and lymph circulation to rejuvenate the skin. Combat fine lines and wrinkles the natural way -- Yaaassss! Benefits of a Facial Massage Aside from a moment of pampering, skin concerns don’t just affect the surface, but they extend down to the foundation. When we apply targeted pressure to the muscles on the face, we are able to treat conditions in the skin leading to flawless and longer-lasting results. Here’s a breakdown of the benefits: Increase Blood Circulation The short-term result of proper blood flow is an immediate glow, as blood rises to the surface, the skin is infused with radiance, so you’re literally glowing from within. The long-term result is the reward of youthful-like skin -- more collagen cells are produced and over time, this contributes to healthier skin. Lift & Plump We hold tension in our faces, so let this facial massage be the way you de-stress and let your face rest. Perhaps having R.B.F. (resting b*tch face), isn’t such a bad thing. When the muscles under our skin are young and strong, they can bounce back quickly from facial tension. However, Jennifer, knows that these muscles lose tone over time and the foundation begins to slip. As these folds deepen, fine lines and wrinkles develop. Oh hey forehead lines, yes, we’re talking about you! A facial massage functions like a non-surgical facelift, helping to tone the muscles under the skin. Ever heard of Face Yoga? It’s another way to workout those facial muscles to maintain or create a youthful glow. Improve Product Absorption Facial massaging also helps to increase the penetration of the ingredients in your favorite skincare. The warmth of your hands and the activation of facial muscles make the skin more responsive to product absorption. So, instead of your product sitting on your skin, your skin will drink those ingredients in. How To Do a Facial Massage At Home Okay, ladies, you know the importance of why facial massages are needed and let us guess, you’re convinced to give it a try! Follow these simple steps: 1. Clean Hands & Face The key to gorgeous skin is a clean foundation, so prep your skin by cleansing and removing all makeup. Ensure your hands are clean so you don’t transfer bacteria to your skin and any open pores. 2. Warm-up Product A successful facial massage requires slip -- you never want to feel like you’re pulling your skin. A small amount of serum, or oil helps your fingers move smoothly across your face - and ensures the actives reach the deepest layers of your skin. Our pick: Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil. 3. Gentle But Firm You want to apply enough pressure that you can feel the muscles beneath the skin. However, you don’t want to press too hard on your skin -- use firm pressure, but keep it gentle. 4. Massage the Lymph Area Using your fingers, massage the lymph nodes under your ears and along the sides of your neck. Sweep from under your ears, down toward your throat and back up along your jawline. This will encourage the build-up that is causing you to feel puffy to keep moving. 5. Circular Motions Use circular motions to massage the perimeter of your face, the sides of your jaw, and your cheekbones. Push your skin up and out - never down. This will help to lift the skin and prevent it from drooping. Repeat for two to three minutes! 6. Smooth Fine-lines Press your fingers between your brows and slowly slide them up to your forehead. Massage against the lines, rather than with them, will help to smooth them in the right direction. 7. De-puff the Eyes Get ready to say, “hello” to brighter eyes! This area is extremely sensitive, so it’s best to be gentle. To massage this area, you want to position your ring finger under your eyes and gently run it across and towards your temples. 8. Caress your Neck and Décolletage Sexy cleavage is always appreciated, so target both your neck and decolletage. Use light, vertical strokes to massage skin from your chest, up to your neck and to your jawline. 9. Mask On Enhance lifting, toning, and de-puffing with a contouring mask. Eminence Organics Snow Mushroom & Reishi Masque is formulated to minimize the look of wrinkles and gives skin a tight and firm appearance. Pro tip: Use this creamy mask in place of your favorite oil or serum to add slip to your facial massage. Massage tools? While you can use tools like jade rollers, we prefer you use those pretty fingers of yours. Be hands-on, and get extra personal with your face to truly feel what your skin needs. The exception: Your eye area. A cool jade roller - or the stainless-steel rollerball of our Hibiscus Ultra Lift Eye Cream - can work wonders for puffy, tired eyes. Simply pop it in the fridge before application for a super-soothing eye treatment. How To Add Massage To Your Skin Care Routine Gorgeous skin is a marathon, not a sprint, so it’s best to work out your skin regularly. Add to your routine two to three times per week and we suggest before bed to give your skin an extra boost in the repair process while you sleep. Add this to your self-care routine, indulge on stressful days or just when you want to treat yourself to a moment of pampering. Are you ready to try the facial massage at home? Amazing! You can also amplify your results with a professional facial massage by a licensed esthetician once a month. Book a professional facial with one of our talented team members at Pretty Please NY.

  • Top 10 Skincare Tips from Our Experts

Gorgeous skin is the goal, and it isn't too hard to achieve, but it does take time, effort and require the proper skills. So, tapping our in-house skincare Guru's on the shoulder for tips on how to achieve your skin goals, was a no-brainer! Jennifer Rasa and Anne Paulick are Pretty Please Skin Therapists in the heart of New York City, and they bring over 30 years of esthetics experience. They’re sharing their knowledge by offering a set of skincare commandments that we know you and your skin are going to love! Here are their top 10 skincare tips that will give you healthy skin and a gorgeous glow. 1. Cleanse, Cleanse, Cleanse! The key to healthy skin is to start with a clean foundation. Cleansing, and sometimes double-cleansing is necessary to ensure your skin receives the deep cleanse you need. When it comes to double-cleansing, think of it as removing and replenishing. The first round of cleansing is to remove make-up, dirt, and 8 long hours at the office. The second round is to replenish your skin with beneficial ingredients. Cleanliness is not just next to godliness but it’s also a step closer to divine looking skin! The first law in skincare is to remove your makeup every night before bed. It’s not called “beauty sleep” for no reason, our skin rejuvenates as we sleep, so boost your beauty sleep with a clean canvas, a nourishing cleanser and allow your skin to repair itself, to prevent breakouts and combat signs of aging. 2. Defense Is Your Best Offense Turn this sports mantra into your skincare ritual! Too much fun in the sun can cause more damage than we all want to admit, so adding sunscreen into your skincare regimen is needed. Protecting your skin from the sun, and the harsh damage it can cause will combat aging spots and hyperpigmentation. Even though sun damage doesn’t show itself right away, it does have lasting effects that will appear later. It’s better to play it safe and shield yourself from too many UV rays, to be ahead of the game. Oh, hey ladies with melanin, the same goes for you! While your deeper skin tones have a protective layer and make retaining the sun easier, sun damage can still be an issue. What about when the sun isn’t out, you ask? Well, even on cloudy days, it’s important to protect your skin. Make sure you step out wearing sunscreen or a double-duty moisturizer with SPF, like our Lilikoi Mineral Defense Moisturizer SPF 33. 3. Once-A-Month Check-Ups Ladies, remember, skincare is not a luxury, it's an investment! Pamper yourself with a facial, and put your skin in the hands of a professional. A monthly assessment by an esthetician will allow you to create a skin care plan that's tailored to your skin needs. Also, having an expert treat your skin means that if a problem, like clogged pores, wrinkles, or dark spots is starting to develop, you can get a specialized treatment before it gets too serious. 4. Beware of The DIY Facial Sometimes perusing Pinterest or YouTube, can open our eyes to at-home remedies, using simple products we buy day-to-day. Are these natural remedies safe and harmless? Perhaps. Can they be cheaper than the spa and perfect for a girl's night in? Absolutely. However, DIY home treatments can also get you in trouble, especially if you have sensitive skin. There's nothing worse than a botched pore extraction and even the innocent cucumber facial can leave you with red, irritated skin. Our advice? Leave it to the professionals. 5. Your Most Valuable Liquid Asset On those days when your skin looks and feels dehydrated, it's because your body is dehydrated as well. A thirsty body = parched skin and that's never a good look, so drink up ladies! Having eight glasses of water a day will hydrate your skin, boost your glow and make it easy to lock in hydration from your moisturizer. Reach for coconut water or try fruit infused water on days when your skin needs to be replenished immediately. 6. Leave Your Skin Alone! We know how tempting it is, you think if you can just pop one little pimple, and all will be right in the world. Deep down you know squeezing and popping will only make the matter worse, so please, let your skin repair itself on its own. What usually happens when you disrupt the repairing process, is redness, inflammation, and hyperpigmentation. Blemishes are like reminders of all the times we listened to the little voice in our heads that told us, "one more squeeze". Be gentle with your skin during breakouts, and allow it to go through the process. We promise a few days is much better than spot treating for weeks or months 7. Get Rid of The Dead Stuff Smooth. Soft. Supple. Are all the things we want our skin to be! Exfoliating is the way to achieve baby soft skin, but only if it's done properly. There's physical exfoliants and chemical exfoliants -- both should be used gently and followed up with moisturizing. Depending on your skin type, exfoliating at least once a week is beneficial to remove dead skin, clean pores, reduce pore size, and revitalize your glow. 8. Invest in Eye Cream Make your eyes POP by using an eye cream that's rich and nourishing. This very fragile and thin layer of skin requires extra TLC and needs nourishment all on its own. Having an eye cream is the perfect way to treat that sensitive area, maintain your youthfulness and treat dark circles and signs of aging. Keeping it hydrated with eye cream both morning and night is the best to sip from the fountain of youth without anyone knowing. A few gentle dabs using your ring finger is all you’ll need. Crow's feet? Don't have those! Bags? Nope! Dark circles? Only around your designer shades. 9. The Serum Factor Let's chat about your new skincare bestie…serums and oils! Remember when applying oil to your skin was considered a no-no? Honey, those times have changed. Exfoliating and hydrating serums were the talk of 2019 and they're not slowing down anytime soon. Glycolic acid plays the role of exfoliator – gently removing layers of imperfections, while hyaluronic taps in to replenish your skin with hydration. A fav beauty oil that was on everyone's lips including ours, was Rosehip Oil. A softly scented oil that was created to deeply moisturize and soften the skin. Looking for a flawless finish? This is the holy trinity when it's time to rejuvenate, revitalize and replenish. 10. Be Kind, Unwind Rest and relaxation are necessary, so be nice to your skin and allow it to rest! Your skin is going through lots of changes due to the environment, stress, hormones, and aging. Sleep and hydration are important, but also indulge in our recommended home care products and treat yourself to a facial with us! Okay ladies, so out of these 10 skincare commandments, which are your favorites to follow? Let us know in the comments or share with us on social media.

  • Facials for Men: 7 Reasons All Men Should Get a Facial This Year

3.07 million Americans used facials four or more times within six months last year. Not all of them were women. That's right — facials for men is becoming a new norm. Imagine opening your eyes after a cleansing facial feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. You don't have to imagine it if you schedule an appointment! Still not convinced? Keep reading to discover the top seven reasons all men should schedule a facial this year. 1. Wash Up Facials are a great way to detox your face from all the airborne impurities it picks up throughout the day. These impurities can clog your pores and cause blemishes, such as acne, bumps, and irritation. If you have sensitive skin, airborne impurities can cause your skin to stress out over skincare products or your razor as well. One of the top benefits of facials for men is that it deep cleans your face. To start, facials implement different cleansers to dig deep into your pores. Then, steam can open up your pores to soften dirt that's tucked away in your skin. The steam makes it easier to remove this dirt to give your skin a thorough powerwash. Not every facialist uses steam, though. There are numerous facial massage and cleansing techniques a facialist can choose from. They can also craft a custom facial based on your skin's specific needs. By scheduling a male's facial, you can find the healthy, clear-looking skin hidden by the dirt and impurities clogging up your pores. 2. Goodbye Blackheads Are you using pore strips at home to extract blackheads on your own? Sometimes, those strips aren't as effective as you'd think. During a men's facial treatment, an experienced facialist can manually extract those blackheads for you. They're also able to safely pop your zits and remove other pustules that are clogging your pores. This process is not the same as squeezing a pimple at home. In fact, trying to pop a pimple can do your skin more harm than good. A facialist can complete this process without the risk of scarring your skin or causing long-term damage. Once your pores are clear, your facialist can also clean your pores. Using alpha hydroxy acids or retinol, your facialist can reduce your pore size. This promotes a better skin tone and clearer-looking skin. Extractions are often uncomfortable. Your facialist will likely suggest this option if you're prone to blackheads. A facialist's skincare techniques can also clear away small blemishes that aren't fading with at-home treatments. 3. Safer Exfoliation Facials for men are also better for proper exfoliation. Exfoliating your skin will remove dead skin cells from your face, improve your skin tone, and shrink the size of your pores. This can ensure the products you're using at home penetrate deeper into your skin, allowing them to work as intended. The scrub you're using at home won't target deeper layers of your skin. This can leave a lot of dead cells beneath the surface of your skin. A facialist can use chemical exfoliators, which use enzymes or acids to remove the skin cells. An at-home at the product, on the other hand, will only target the skin's surface. Shaving every few days can cause bumps and other skin irritations. Exfoliation can smooth out your skin, reduce inflammation, and ease away razor burn. The next time you shave, you'll find the process is less painful with smoother skin. 4. Learn About You Everyone's skincare needs are different. Speaking with a professional facialist can help you learn more about your skin. By scheduling regular facials for men, you can determine if you're using the right products — or if those products are causing your skin problems. Your facialist can tell you more about your skin type than you can realize on your own by looking in the bathroom mirror. By determining your skin type, you can learn about the best products and techniques for your skin. Their recommendations can help address your short- and long-term skincare concerns. 5. Better Tools Two-thirds of male survey respondents said they use facial skincare products at home. However, some of these products could do your skin more harm than good. If you're using the wrong products for your skin type, it could also cause irritation. Facialists also have better tools than you'd have access to at home. Men's facials can involve radio frequency, LED lights, ultrasound, or electric current therapies. The type of tools needed depends on your skin concerns. Many of these tools are for professional use only. Scheduling a regular men's facial can give you access to these high-level therapies. As a result, you can make sure your skin gets the best possible treatment. 6. Get the Blood Flowing When our blood circulation slows down, our skin can no longer receive the nutrients it needs to make repairs. Aging is often one of the factors that contribute to slower circulation. This, in turn, can cause tired, dull-looking skin. In order to avoid this indicator of aging, a facialist can stimulate your blood flow using a skin massage. In addition to increasing blood flow to your face's skin cells, this will help you achieve a natural-looking glow. Your cells will receive the nutrients and oxygen they need to make the necessary repairs. 7. Real Relaxation The benefits of facials aren't all about your skin health. Facials can also help you relax after a long day. After exhausting yourself at work, home, or an intense gym session, a men's facial can help you unwind both mentally and physically. Reducing your stress hormones can also help benefit your skin, allowing you to double up on the benefits. As you relax, a facialist will cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate, and rejuvenate your mind, body, and skin!
