How To Improve Skin Texture

Acne free even-toned glowing skin without a pore in sight, is ideal when thinking about your skin goals. It’s no secret that we’re all pining over smooth skin, but the reality is that most of us experience an uneven skin texture.

At Pretty Please, our Skin Experts notice the common concern is everyone wanting to improve the texture of their skin. Many suffer from having a flaky, rough or bumpy complexion, large pores or acne scarring. Whether your concern is due to acne, aging or pore size, texture issues can leave skin looking dull and less youthful. With the decade of experience our Founder, Jennifer Rasa, at Pretty Please has curated a list of treatment options to assist our clients with reaching their skin goals.

We offer a variety of facials and treatments to improve the texture of your skin and restore your glow. Before treating your skin, it’s best to know what’s causing texture and dullness, so here’s our guide to what causes uneven skin texture and how to fix it.

Causes of Uneven Skin Texture

Over your lifetime, your skin will go through many changes that affect and alter its surface. These are the most common causes of uneven skin texture:

1. Dry skin

Dry skin is a common cause of uneven skin texture. Lacking moisture in the skin can cause dead skin cells to build on the skin’s surface, making it appear rough, flaky and dull. Treating your dry skin will require a 2-step regimen of exfoliating and moisturizing. Regular exfoliation with a physical or chemical exfoliant will remove dead skin and nourish healthy cells hidden beneath. Following up with a moisturizer that is rich in active ingredients and fatty acids will not only replenish moisture but also strengthen your skin’s lipid barrier. Together, these steps keep skin soft, smooth and supple.

Adding a monthly facial to your routine will also enhance the texture of your skin, and we have just the facial for you!

Facial Recommendation: Keep Calm Facial - this facial will gently exfoliate and replenish moisture with rosehip oil.

2. Acne-prone skin

When you think of bumpy rough skin texture, you immediately think of acne-prone skin. From small raised pimples to large inflamed acne, all types of blemishes can cause a bumpy and irregular skin texture. Depending on the severity of your acne, these could be isolated to one area or cover your entire complexion.

Acne is triggered by excess oil, bacteria, hormones, and genetics. The struggle with acne-prone skin is that large pores become congested and the combination of oil, dead skin and bacteria leads to breakouts. Using salicylic acid has become an effective way for treating acne because the gentle BHA clears blocked pores, calms irritated skin and prevents future breakouts. Using skincare products with salicylic acid will contribute to a smoother, more even complexion.

Our product recommendation:

3. Acne Scarring

Acne-prone skin sadly likes to leave behind a reminder of its presence even after treating your acne problems. Acne scarring can occur from picking and popping, or sometimes just an occurrence due to the melanin in your skin. As acne heals, your skin elicits an inflammatory response to repair the damaged tissue, which can disrupt the production of collagen, causing indented scars to sink into the skin.

Improving acne scars and smoothing out your texture can be done using a chemical exfoliant like lactic acid, it’s an AHA and used to refine your skin’s surface. Ingredients like Vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are perfect to improve elasticity and plump your complexion -- both should also be added to your skincare regimen.

Facial Recommendation: Clear it & Glow Facial

4. Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Treating fine lines and wrinkles may seem impossible to some because as you age, your skin’s collagen and elasticity deplete. Skin cell turnover slows down and your complexion becomes increasingly dry and rough. Without a proper skin care regimen, and professional treatments, your skin may develop a variety of wrinkles, from crow’s feet and laugh lines to gravitational folds.

At Pretty Please we have an anti-aging facial that we recommend to our clients who are looking to restore firmness in their skin. The Blueberry Detox Firming Facial is great for rejuvenating your skin and works to decrease puffiness and stimulates collagen. Our Founder Jennifer Rasa would also recommend products with peptides because, in the process of stimulating collagen and elastin production, peptides diminish the look of wrinkles and promote firmer, more resilient skin.

Product Pick:

5. Large Pores

If you’re struggling with large pores, this section is just for you. While it’s believed that pore size is determined by genetics, they can become enlarged due to congestion and the aging process. When oil and dirt clog your pores, the diameter of the opening actually expands. As you age and your skin has less elasticity, it loses the ability to “bounce back,” and pores become even more prominent.

For this type of skin problem, you want to first clear your congested pores and improve elasticity. Using a clarifying cleanser will offer a deep cleanse and unclog pores. Following that up with a chemical exfoliant like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to dissolve the barrier that holds dead skin cells on the skin’s surface and helps to keep pores clean. Professional Treatments To Improve Skin Texture.

In addition to your skincare regimen at home, we would recommend a professional’s touch from time to time. A monthly facial will help create healthy skin, treat your skin concerns and boost your glow. Scheduling a one-on-one consultation with one of our estheticians is essential to creating your new skin journey.

Here are a few professional treatments we offer at Pretty Please:

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a type of physical exfoliation that uses a specialized device to buff away the surface layer of the skin. As dead skin is cleared away, this process reveals new skin cells that look and feel smoother.

Professional Peels

Chemical Peels would be considered a powerful and concentrated version of your at-home exfoliant. They deliver a high percentage of active ingredients to break the bonds that hold dead skin cells on your skin’s surface. These peels typically employ fruit acids such as papaya or pineapple which, in addition to exfoliating skin, are rich antioxidants that minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
